All pet owners must experience it at one time. I still think of my cat who died nearly 4 years ago but the heart-wrenching pain does dissipate after a few months. I personally felt more grief and displayed more emotions when my cat was dying/died than for my relatives who've died. My mum has never got over the death of her dog 15 years ago and refuses now to have another dog - even though Rex died in his sleep, apparently peacefully, plus he was at least 13, but it was so unexpected that my mother never got over the shock of finding him dead in the kitchen. He was a great dog, a real character and still missed today.
It's consoling to consider the great life the pets have had and that they were given lots of love and attention. They still 'live on' in our memories.
I'm sorry for your loss.
