It's an education thing. Racist jokes used to be socially acceptable and cause much mirth. No harm intended - just a bit of fun. But it still reinforced stereotypes that an educated developed society needed to outgrow.
So it is with height. We tend to worship it in our society and think less of shorter people. Oh I know people will claim that's tosh ... but actually it's true.
