Kindle Fire: screen keeps going off
Trollheart
20-01-2015
I just recently bought the Kindle Fire tablet for my sister, but in the last few days the screen has started going off in the middle of my reading. It's nothing to do with battery power: sometimes this is at 80% and it still happens. I've increased the display-off time until I've now got it at "never turn off", and yet it still happens. This is often after I've just turned a page.

Any ideas? Something to do with firmware? Some setting I'm not aware of?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

You could try a factory reset. If it doesn't help it maybe faulty and Amazon will replace it.

ETA: Also try pressing the power button fairly hard several times incase it's a dodgy contact.

When you hit the power button, is the kindle app still open, or is it closed, which may suggest it's crashing etc. Is it only on the Kindle app or other things like gaming, web etc.

I'd suggest using the "mayday" feature and talking to a advisor, they were pretty good when I had a problem, they can actually take control of your kindle and try to sort it out for you.

The factory reset worries me. It tell me it will clear all downloaded content from the Fire. Does that mean it clears it from the cloud too? Do I then have to repurchase any books I bought after the reset is done?

No the Kindle app is open. What happens is I'm reading, the screen goes off and then I have to pres the power button, nothing happens. Press it several times, nothing happens. Eventually the screensaver comes on. Tap in my PIN and I'm back on the page I was on.

I'm not familiar with the Mayday option. Where is that?
Thanks

Do you have your kindle fire in a magnetised cover? My screen sometimes goes off if the cover isn't folded back at the right angle.

This could very well be the problem,. I've been researching this on other forums and the general consensus seems to be that the magnet in the cover of the case can adversely affect the Kindle, causing it to spontaneously shut off . I'm going to try it without the case for a while and will let you know if the problem reoccurs.

This looks like it may indeed be the problem. Taking the Kindle out of its case, and then holding it over the case triggers the screen blanking, move it away and it comes back on again. I will continue to test it, but at the moment I'm pretty confident that using it without the case while reading should solve the problem. I should also have mentioned that while in the case the Kindle was also misreporting the remaining time in the chapters, which could certainly happen if magnetic interference was present.

How was it miss reporting time left, don't forget it goes by your reading speed (or to be accurate the rate in which you turn the page). So if your device was turning of, when you turned pages, it would have trouble keeping a accurate record of your reading speed.

Because it would say things like 3 hours 45 minutes lieft (impossible, as the chapter was not superlong and I'm a reasonably fast reader) then a moment later (next page say) it was 1 hr 14 mins, then 40 minutes, then 2 hours 10 mins etc...

Okay, final word. I've now used the Kindle for a few hours without the case and there has been no reoccurence of the problem.

Therefore the rule would appear to be: if your Kindle starts gong off unexpectedly or behaving oddly, and you have it in a case with a magnetic clip, take it out of the case and it should work okay.

Actually, all kindles were originally designed to shut off when close to a magnetic source as a power saving feature.
