Behind Ken and the freedom of speech debate lies this...

The freedom to abuse:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...rticle-2918138

Of course some are smarter about it. A bit more passive aggressive in their manner. They use code words or straddle grey areas, but the intent is the same: to relate to another person as an inferior being.

I'm not an advocate of banning it even where grossly offensive, but should it be encouraged?

Should we encourage people to offend people where it's not actually necessary or warranted?

Should we persist on demanding why not or should we be asking simply 'why'?

Is 'because I can' a good enough answer in a modern society?

I ask because we've spent a lot of time on this forum demanding the right to offend and, in my opinion, not enough time asking ourselves, 'why are we so hellbent on offending people, especially minorities, whenever or wherever possible?

Language is important & words are powerful, use them wisely.

To those who say utter freedom of speech I say we are not responsible enough to be given that power. We need education around the use of words and language. We need to know words can be cruel and offensive and words can also be beautiful and inspirational.

Most of all we need to show each other respect and kindness, whether that be through words or deeds.

So so true.

I blame Twitter for all this abuse a lot of celebs are now getting . Celebs should avoid Twitter .

Twitter is like giving out your postal address to all and sundry which I'm sure no celeb would ever do .

There are some real nasty people in this world and you should not give them them a chance of getting to you, otherwise you're going to suffer the consequences in loss of peace of mind and fear for your safety .

And also celebs should not be forced by whoever is employing them to go on Twitter and give out their twitter address .

Can you remember the days before the Internet, none of this crap . But then we couldn't bitch about them being nasty either

If Jamelia's hate tweets started with her criticism of Ken, then I would see it as an outburst by a particular minority. They must surely be people who are CBB viewers, Loose Women viewers and tweeters.

I would therefore decline to be included in the "we" of "why are we so hellbent on offending people, especially minorities, whenever or wherever possible?". I am liberal, but not guilty.

Even the offenders may be entirely self-righteous, and not, in their own minds "hellbent on offending". It is possible that they don't recognise their own offensiveness.

Excellent comments everyone!

So why is Katie H and her clique so popular?

Also if one wants to "tell it like it is" it can be done in a manner that is accurate yet not insulting.

Absolutely, can you imagine if those icons of the past like Clark Gable, Marylin Monroe, Elvis, Ava Gardner, Bing Crosby etc had to endure the crap the celebs of today suffer .

The 'I tell it like it is' types usually use it to try and excuse rudeness.

Some listen to Katie H and hear 'I think I'm better than you'

others listen to her and hear it as 'YOU are better than you'

If you hear the latter then you warm to her, if not you won't

I disagree completely. That is surely like telling a child to avoid school because of bullies. In this day and age Twitter is a powerful tool for celebrities to connect to their fans on a more personal level, they shouldn't have to avoid it due to "trolls" IMO.

And I disagree completely with you . Have you read my other post re icons of the past ?

All actors and singers have agents . If you want to write to them, do so through the agent .

An actor on screen is playing a part, a singer is also playing a part as an entertainer .
Why should any Tom, Dick or Sheila have a right to crash their private lives .
When you finish your days work you should be able to come home and forget about it, not to be reminded of it with endless tweets etc.

I think people that are generally at the bottom of the shit-pit of life, maybe don't have too much, low paid jobs etc want to find people they can point at as being even lower down to make themselves feel better about their lot in life. I know that sounds like I'm just being spiteful, but I really mean it. When economies are struggling it's easier to get people to hate people, or blame people because people are working and still going without. I hear working class people ready to vote for UKIP and I despair. UKIP is no more for the working class as the Tory party and people on low wages as minimum wage slaves will suffer at their hands dreadfully, but they fail to see it. The elites don’t need the NHS, meals on wheels, community centres etc, etc. Clouded by Farage doing the immigration blame-game. He's a public school boy and ex-commodity broker who is a firm believer in corporate power over worker's rights. I don't have a problem with all that if you're honest about what you are, but his cheeky chappy “I'm for the common man” is laughable. People seem to like that in politics these days though, he says a few rude things and he's "telling it like it is". Much like Hopkins “hahaha, fatty!” . Come on Hopkins, turn that intellect onto something of worth and actually earn a pay cheque. It’s pathetic, in the real sense of the word. You don't need substance anymore, just some caricature personality. Boris is another who gets away with it.

The working classes will always be ruled by the political elite (left and right) because we're so easy to divide and turn against each other. We'd be a truly terrifying force if we all just worked together.
