my contract ends on march 23rd, I thought i had to contact o2 with 30 days notice, so i contacted them the other day and they said if i cancel now they will charge me an early termination fee. I explained that i am not canceling it early, i just don't want it to renew, so i am canceling the renewal of the contract. They said i can't do that.

I find this a bit confusing because if i contact them after 23rd feb they will charge me for not giving them 30 days notice. I am probably being an airhead here, but i appreciate your help

thanks

hi larn.....can I ask what you're going to do when you contract ends.....Mine ended end of Dec. (you can see a thread I started earlier today)....I went on PAYG with them with a £10 bundle....to say it's PAYG is an utter joke because what you don't use at the end of a month you lose and have to pay again......IMO that's contract - not PAYG !!!...I'm looking for another provider....Also, you probably know this already - but they unlock your phone for free if you've been on contract.....you just need to complete a form on their web page.......

It is PAYG. But you have the option of whether to buy an add-on or not. I get 3000 texts and 300 minutes among a £15 bundle with three but once the 30 days are over I lose those. There is no deferrment to the next month or months with any of these PAYG add-ons. But I find the PAYG add-ons are much cheaper than doing standard PAYG.

The likelihood is that you are not going to use everything among the add-ons during the 30 days, but if you use at least £10 of data, texts and calls based on standard rates then the add-ons are worth every penny and is better than doing standard PAYG with what you use coming off the top up value. You would need a lot more than £10 top up balance to cover you for 30 days by doing standard PAYG.

I think this is a standard thing across all of the networks. Your contract will be terminated 30 days after you give notice - which means you cannot give notice at 60 days or 90 days without incurring an early termination fee.

AFAIK the only way you can cancel without paying a penny more than you need to is to call them exactly 30 days before your contract's minimum term expires.

It's not just the mobile companies which do this. It's common with fixed line telecoms and Sky.
