Hair Dye/Bleach Advice (any help appreciated)
Hi
![]() First off, I'm looking for advice on what I can do myself at home. I'm aware of the "go to a professional" but there are a number of problems - including a limited amount of money - that don't make that really viable right now. Having spoken to a friend who is also branch manager of a local Toni & Guy, I decided to recolour my hair, using some advice they gave me. I'm naturally a rather dark/dull brown and although undecided on what colour to go for at first, I knew I'd have to bleach it to begin with. She's off on a holiday in Cuba right now, so hopefully there's someone else who can help me ![]() I ended up bleaching it twice, and have since also put on a box dye of blonde to even out the uneven golden hues I still had from the bleach. Despite my concerns my hair still feels surprisingly healthy, it's still soft and I'm conditioning it regularly. But I don't want to be stuck with this dark blonde. In terms of colour options I'm thinking of either going for a platinum white or a purple - very different colours, with very different requirements. Here's where I would appreciate any advice either from someone in the know, or someone who has had experience. I'm making sure not to just jump in at the deep end and hope for the best - and so far, it's not gone too badly by sticking to that approach ![]() If I was to go for platinum white, I'd undoubtedly need to dye it again. The questions I have are - Will the fact I've used a box dye interfere with further bleach? Would it have been better to just bleach it three times consecutively? - Is another bleaching (followed by silver toning) likely to get me towards the colour I want? - How long should you ideally leave between bleaching sessions? - Is three bleaches far too excessive, and should I reconsider leaving it to a professional if I want this colour, given how many processes I seem to need? If I was to go for a purple colour, I'd likely have to go for a box dye. I've already darkened the bleach blonde by adding the blonde box dye already. - What should I do to make sure I get the shade of purple I want? - Is a permanent or semi-permanent recommended at this stage? - Will the blonde box dye impact the application of another dye? - Will using a darker purple box dye result in purple or darker, or could it result in some obscure colour? I'm in no rush to sort this, and it's not an emergency or anything - I'm just not too fond of the dark blonde I have right now. Any advice or recommendations (apart from the 'seek a professional') is greatly appreciated ![]() Thanks |

For the white hair I would definitely recommend to go to the salon as you could really damage your hair by over bleaching, the box blonde dye should not interfere too much with it being a light colour.
The purple would be very bright onto blonde hair so depends what look you are going for whether to put a brown dye on first. Purple dye fades really fast so you have to dye it regularly to maintain a bright colour but it also penetrates right into the hair so it is a nightmare if you want to go blonde again in future. BEWARE of developing an allergy to hair dye as I have done after using purple dye too often and I can no longer dye my hair due to extreme reaction. Always do a patch test even when you have used the dye before . |

This is definitely an instance of "salon only"! It might have been fine if you hadn't used the box dye, but they are murderous to strip out at the best of times. Also, bleaching results can be very unpredictable. There's a bit of a fine art to toning hair after bleaching, and platinum is not an easy shade to reach.

Thanks for the advice.
I am indeed being careful, patch tests and all. I've heard and seen some of the horror stories, particularly from bleaching. I've been fortunate enough so far to avoid any missteps, and fully intend to keep it that way. I suspected platinum might be a 'salon only' kind of deal. I only know that they're "very pricy", but out of curiosity how much could I expect to pay if I decided to go to one? Aside from the cost, I've always been too nervous to go to a salon...though I suspect I may have to get over that at some stage. So casting the platinum idea aside, how long should I wait before trying for the purple? It's been a few days since I last did anything to my hair... would it be okay to start up again the other side of the weekend or should I leave it a bit longer to recover? Thanks again!

For semi permanent purple hair colour try Manic Panic which isn't tested on animals and does lots of bright colours

Platinum:. I'm a natural dark brunette and went to the salon for light blonde, you need a high level of bleaching and it's always better to have the finishing touches there. It'll be more expensive and take more time but at least you'll know it's the right colour, Purple: Box Dye. I went from (dyed) dark blonde to red and it came out a really vibrant red. I went for permanent so I'd only have to top it up every month instead of two weeks. It'd say if you want vibrant, go for the brightest, it's easier to darken hair than lighten it. Try Live colour XXL if you want a really obviously purple shade. However if you want a semi one, try Loreal,s plum colour. If you want it lighter, mix the paste with a thick conditioner. Again this is from experience, I wanted light blue dip dye, bought a royal blue Live Colour one and lightened it with conditioner Good luck! |

I forgot to ask; what length is your hair?
Thanks to everyone else for their recommendations. I'll be casting the platinum idea aside, as there's just too much that could go wrong - and those horror stories really are horrifying I'm tempted to cast my fears aside and go to a salon some time for it mind you. Aiming for a purple, I don't want it to be luminous or extremely in your face, but to at least stand out distinctly from the dull burgundy colour you seem to get if you just apply purple to untreated brown hair.

I was assuming you had long hair, go for the bleach then go purple when you get bored of that!

Instead of going to an actual salon what you could is go to a college where they have a hair salon within as the prices are so much cheaper. Obviously a trainee would be doing your hair but they would always be assisted by teachers anyway.

Make sure you continue to condition the hell out of that hair. That's a lot of bleach, it needs as much moisture and hydration as possible.

Aside from financial barriers I also have to deal with body dysmorphia/anxiety - so going into these environments can often be quite a taxing challenge for me. I won't feel so uneasy if I can at least cut the cost a little bit I'll think about going at some point in future.Quote:

Thanks for that, I've just taken a look at the prices of our local college salon and they're a lot more reasonable. Seem to have a solid reputation as well.

My hair seems quite resilient, and it's still quite soft. ![]() |
