hi bought a TX-55740B Panasonic LCD tv on the 9th of January but when there are light colours on screen or when watching football there seems to be a vertical black line that appears to the left of the screen

what is causing it and is it to be expected ??

It should not be there. If it is visible no matter whether you are watching via the built in tuner or some external device (a Sky box, PVR or DVD/Blu-Ray player for example) then it might be a panel fault.

But at only a couple of weeks old you have a case for returning it to wherever you bought it from and getting it sorted.

It's a fault, take it back for an exchange. You may get asked " the get out out question" have you dropped it sir ? I think you know the answer to that.

It happens.

How on earth can they tell that without seeing the actual set.

What exactly does this line look like. If it is a very thin black line that never changes colour regardless of the picture then it is NOT banding. Banding would be where the uniformity of the backlighting is not consistent so you get areas that are slightly darker or lighter than others. But these areas will change colour with the image being displayed.

chrisjr if I watch something Dark or with dark colours its perfect its when colours like red light blue and certain whites (seems to happen more on panning shots) the bar is only a slim one

if that makes sense

Is the bar the same basic colour as the rest of the image just a different shade. So if the screen is completely white this bar is grey for example?

If so then that could be banding. But even so it could be considered faulty. Just depends on how annoying it is to you and how much hassle would be involved getting the supplier to agree that it is faulty. And then you have to factor in whether any replacement would have the same issue or even be worse!

Just that when you said black line in your OP I was assuming that it was a one or two pixel wide line that was always black regardless of the picture. That would more likely be a fault in the display panel itself rather than the backlighting which is what causes uneven colour bands to appear.

Not sure what they are on about but banding is BAD.

It spoils the whole viewing experience and should not happen. It is a fault.

Under laws such as the Sale of Goods Act your contract is with whoever sold the item to you. So in that respect it is expected that Panasonic will tell you to chase up the retailer.

The problem you then face of course is getting them to accept that it is in fact a fault and not something within the normal operating tolerances of the TV. And if the retailer in question can declare it working "normally" without even bothering to look at it then you could be in for a bit of a struggle unfortunately.
