Roku Streaming Stick and Screen Mirroring
Just seen this ..
http://blog.roku.com/blog/2014/10/02...droid-devices/ Apparently it's using the Miracast method to mirror your screen to your TV. I'm wondering if i could actually replace my smart bluray player and chromecast with one of these devices as it seems like it could the job of both and still allow me to access my NAS drive via DLNA. |

How are you going to play back Blu-ray and 1080p24 content at the proper framerate ? I imagine the Roku can only manage 50Hz/60Hz playback
Anyway, I'm not a picture quality-phile so as long as it's smooth, non interrupted playback with a PQ similar to what I've been getting playing back content from my NAS through my bluray player then I'd be quite happy. |

You know when you kind of wish you'd scrolled down the page when you were reading about screen mirroring to see what devices you could actually do it on before going out to buy the bloody device ?

I don’t know if they have updated the devices on the Roku site since they issued that list but my Alcatel One Touch 6034R works fine and are not listed so I assume any Android that has Screen Cast, Screen Mirror, or as Alcatel call it on my phone Screen Share will work.
The DLNA support isn't great either - it'll only tend to play videos in H264 codecs, which is and isn't a problem for me at the moment because i've got videos encoded in all sorts. The idea behind getting it was to replace the Chromecast and BluRay player and have a single device which, in a sense, it will do what i want it to do, but the likelihood is that if i keep it, i'm going to have to make sure to re-encode everything on my NAS drive to the H264 codec. I tried an old episode of 'The Young Ones' and re-encoded that to H264 and it came out perfectly fine so it's not really the end of the world i suppose if i have to do everything else. |
