Could be a good combination if they can merge the networks it will solve Three's 2G fallback and call capacity issues and O2's woeful 3G network in one go.

But do nothing for the 2014 4G roll-out list.

Just think what they could have done if they had spent £10 billion on that.

Oh come on, this is business. Spending any money on enhancing the customer experience is the last thing on their mind

So a flood of O2 customers swamping Three's 3G network? lol. No thanks.

Where to go now. I don't want 2g fallback at all unless Im on the phone and phones about to disconnect, I'd rather have no data and wait till 3G unless I'm in the middle of no where.,what do they benefit buying o2, the network is shocking.

3 aren't buying O2, Hutchison Whampoa (3 UK's owners) are.

As HWL it did with O2 Ireland -

"O2 is becoming Three.

We will soon be welcoming O2 customers into the Three family. You’ll see the O2 logo disappearing on the high street and online and start to be replaced by Three, but for you, it’ll be business as usual.

You can also look forward to some exciting developments over the next few months like improved data coverage and superfast 4G. You can now get Presale tickets for 3Arena, and soon you’ll be able to talk to our new Irish Customer Care Team"

Your position is unusual though, I'd rather have something than nothing at all.

Some phones will allow you to select 2G or 3/4G only mode.

So get an Android phone and set it to WCDMA preferred. That's all your 3 SIM does anyway.

So we'll have gone from 5 networks to 3 in 5 years.

I can't see that being particularly good for the consumer in terms of competition or costs.

Ios jailbroken at the mo, I hope when the time comes ios9 will allow me to disable 2g and I can activate manually wheh got no signal in rural areas. I would of thought for 2bn more the EE network would be a lot easier for three to merge with the same frequencys and MBNL arrangement.

I hope they have the funds to invest in o2's network or it's potentially (depending on how they merge backhaul) going to drag Three's network down,

It's going to be exciting to see how they sort this all out over the next few months and years, rubbish for consumers though, higher prices all round I'd say unless Vodafone want to move off the bottom position as UKs smallest network,
Unless regulation interrupts I see three's priorities as this:
Upgrading most the 900mhz sites to 800mhz 4g and opening up O2's 2g to three customers
Opening up both networks 3g sites
Slowly switching off or upgrading these sites much like EE has done with orange
I can see unlimited data starting to be phased out by the summer

I hope so. Three have gone to pot over the past year. Dreadful service, empty promises, poor 3G and 4G speeds and coverage.

I left Three due to awful customer service and joined O2 - now they're following me

Really hope O2 keep their customer service, although I guess it will all be merged...

A shame - I enjoyed being with O2!

For me personally, where I live/travel, Three have gone to pot over the past year. Dreadful service, empty promises, poor 3G and 4G speeds and coverage.
Fixed that for you.

Same here, i left due to being lied to with regards to congestion that lasted all 24 months of my contract. I was told every month that the mast near where i worked and lived would be upgraded..it never happened.

Glad to be back on a decent (FOR ME) network that performs well (FOR ME).

Thought i'd escaped their clutches too mate

For me I had issues with an app that was on their carrier update that used my data allowance over night (1GB!) that they refused to refund me, and when I tried to leave them at end of contract they continually put me on hold / disconnected me etc. Hate their customer service.

At least we share each others pain!!

three's network already sucks.

Three do have more 3g coverage than O2 I give you that but both are poor speeds.

You will actually gain because finally will have proper 2g fallback.

I don't think I've ever needed proper 2g fallback in years. 3's speeds are still pretty good if you aren't in a congested urban area.

It might "suck" for you, but don't assume the same applies to everyone.

It was fine for me, albeit no 4G.
