Report: The Apple Watch Will Only Last 2.5 Hours With "Heavy" Use

"... the Apple Watch the battery is looking at just 2.5 to 4 hours of "active application use" before it dies."

Easy-peasy, just put four or five watches on your wrist(s) Or 6.

I'm in target market for a Apple Watch. I have an iPhone, and I want to do some exercise tracking.

The irony is that the M8 chip in the iPhone 6 already does some tracking all day; the Health app tells me how many steps, stairs climbed etc. and if I want to do running there are lots of apps to help such as Runtastic or MapMyRun.

The problem for any smart watch maker is the tiny battery. You either have a very basic display and limited capabilities, or a short battery life. With most phones, if you hammer them continually with CPU intensive games (for example) you will get rapidly reduced battery life.

My bigger concern about the Apple Watch 1 is that Apple have hired lots of experts form the watch industry since, so the version 2 is likely to be a lot prettier.

They put a Retina screen on it. They wanted it to look pretty and did not consider an impact on the battery. Also it looks too geeky. I think most of smartwatch manufacturers realise now that people want a watch to look pretty (I do anyway) and not like something from 70s sci-fi.

Personally I'll stick with my Pebble until at least the 2nd version of the Apple Watch. The monochrome e-Ink display although nowhere near as fancy looking does have a great advantage with battery life.

I just got a Pebble today and I really like it. Simple but it works well.

I'll wait until Apple Watch 2.0.

Buy a bluetooth HRM, then you'll be able to do more with your iPhone than you could with an iPhone + apple watch (and more accurately as well). Same goes for every other smartphone/smartwatch combo.

Exercise tracking is a cracking idea for many people; smartwatches are just not the best way to do it.

This pretty much got reported back in October when Tim Cook had to intervene on over enthusiastic criticism going on with regards to the likes of the 360 battery life.
The media had certainly set up an angle that the iWatch would be this holy grail everyone was seeking.

I'd suggest this review one of many candidates for inspiring Tim Cook to do his leak a couple of weeks later, the Guardian claiming the battery life on the great looking Moto 360 is 'inexcusable',
http://www.theguardian.com/technolog...r-battery-life

Amazon reviews of that 360 are overall excellent, some again claiming they get 2 days battery, though at the high price they likely paid it is an enthusiasts device.

I'd still be surprised by low battery in the iWatch. With something like a Cortex M0+ correctly used, I'd say a week is possible. That sub £10 Mi Band manages it so why not a watch with a bigger battery ?

It's hard to take your posts seriously when you don't even know what the product is called.

To be honest if these guys can't get a week of regular use out of their smart watches, they shouldn't really be releasing them. It's ripping off the consumer. People (mass market not geeks) used to years of battery life on a digital watch won't take kindly to a smart watch that only lasts a day...and costs £200 plus and doesn't really do a lot.

Apple TV.

Well, seemingly neither do you. It does not have one name, it has 3.

And that answers the question, Wanting it as both jewellery and watch they are marketing it under 3 different names.
Well I gotta laugh, the 'Watch Sport' has got rid of that shite 6000 series aluminium and took up my past suggestion here of using some half decent non bendy 7000 series.

https://www.apple.com/uk/watch/apple-watch-sport/

"that’s 60 per cent stronger than standard alloys"

Decodes to 'not our usual cheaper stuff'. Yes we know Apple, 7000 series is a solid non bendy aluminium.

I have watches that cost thousands and require winding every day.

As a 1st generation release, 1 day is ok.

Unless you read the Guardian, where failing to always last one complete day is "inescusable".

What is near inexcusable about the Moto 360 is the near £200 price.

Their only cop out is spending loads and loads of dish making the first ever round LCD screen I've likely seen.
Now that is a first.

How much should it cost then? How do you know the recoveries they are required to make?

I don't read the guardian and also don't need someone else to tell me what to think on something as trivial as how long the battery lasts on a smartwatch.

However, I am interested in your claim that the battery should last a week. Could you explain why all these companies cannot get that performance. Maybe you should offer your services to them as they are clearly lacking in the expertise you have.

That shouldn't be a problem. It's main use will be to show it off and pose with it, then go back to using your phone and ipad.

Yes, any news on which celebrities they have signed up to wear one ?

And just maybe it will sneak into some US drama pre-launch, with no one spotting it.

That sound like very good marketing and would make a lot of business sense.

On reading the source of the source (at 9 to 5 mac) all we get is that 2014 Apple statement of wanting up to 4.5 hours of active use (I really can't see anyone active on such a small thing for long) and 19 hours active/passive.

So really we get back to that Guardian headline on 'under 19 hours 360' being inexcusable.

I quite imagine the 3 watches will achieve similar to that round Moto 360, sometimes more sometimes less.

Oh, so you finally got around to looking at the actual Apple website. Well done.

3 names my arse.

A lot of bull smell about yes.
"And we have curated 3 distinct collections to help you decide which watch is for you."

Looks and reads like 3 watches. Let's hope all 3 look betterin the flesh. They have a certain peculiarity about them all.
