I'm not sure it would be a failure. Although im not sure Doctor Who would translate to the big screen very well
Done properly it could be great, but which Doctor would they use ? RTD always said if there was a movie it would have to be whover was playing the TV Dr at the time.

besides I think RTD should have had some involvement in the 50th and left it at that. I know he said he'd feel like a 'ghost at the wedding' if involved in the writing of the 50th but none-the-less they could have asked him to do a brief cameo walking round the gallery just before Tom arrived to do his cameo. Maybe bumping into each other as one was leaving and the other arriving with Tom saying 'I admire your work' ...

I think if there was a movie, RTD would be the absolute perfect person to write it. The stolen earth/journeys end had the scale, emotions and grandeur more so than many of the biggest blockbusters out there today, and judging that all his finales were of good quality, as were the majority of his episodes, I think he more than proved he knows how to write who.
If they did consider a movie though, I would like it to be done in the way of the 50th, wherein, it's the current doctor (with one or two returnee doctors as well) and it dosen't contradict anything said in the show. With RTD at the helm though, the man who loves who and creator of new who, I doubt there would be any problem, as i'm sure he'd absolutely wan't to keep it in line with the show.

I find this whole story very odd and inconsistent. It makes no sense with pretty much everything else RTD has ever said about the show since he left. Would he be good at doing a movie? Of course. Should he? No way.
I think he was probably being enthusiastic and funny and its been twisted into 'serious' news.
Why would someone who had repeatedly refused to return saying he wants to look to the future suddenly think it wise not to be a ghost at the wedding but instead to crash the bloody thing! Nay, hi-Jack it no less! Nah. Slow news day.

If they were to go for a movie, I'd suspect the best course of action would be for it to feature the current TV Doctor at the time. It worked for The X Files after all - the first X Files movie was set between Season 5 and Season 6, carried on the ongoing events of the series whilst also being quite accessible to a wider audience. I feel that this may be the only sort of way they could do a Doctor Who movie.
In terms of story, a film would have to be quite self-contained. It could be as big and bold as it wants, but there are certain no-go areas too - for example, I don't feel the movie should feature a regeneration - that should be saved for the TV show.
To be honest though, the biggest dilemma regarding a potential movie is...why? Why does there have to be a movie? Is it simply for the sake of opportunity to show something a bit more technologically ambitious? If so, then it's going to stick out like a sore thumb compared to the series. And if it's not for that kind of reason, then what does a movie have to offer that an extended episode does not?
It's amazing this tiny little 60's sci-fi show is capable of even warranting blockbuster-debate, but I just don't know if Doctor Who needs a movie.

Exactly. tickles me the way people can jump on these kind of things and get over excited.
The "and it should be in cinemas immediately!" line for instance - pure enthusiasm with no hint of reality involved.
Nice to see he's so fond of the show mind, and in a decade or two when the TV run has finished then maybe he'll be the one to revive it again

Capaldi will be approaching his 80's
And Tom Baker will be... in his 100's, stuck in the sodding time vortex...again!

I suspect that him not wanting to write for the 50th or indeed any normal episode since he left, even though Moffat says he asks every year, probably is to do with the fact that he would be writing for Moffat, and it would have to be a script that fit in with what Moffat wants the show to be, which he wouldn't like after previously writing for who in a position where he could do whatever he wanted.
RTD being asked to write a potential movie on the other hand would be different, as he would be in charge of the script, and could do whatever he wanted with it just like he could when he wrote for the show, so I think even though he keeps saying no to episodes, he would be very likely to take up the offer of a potential movie if he were ever asked.

As Saladfingers said, complete non story and RTD was just being his humorous self. I don't want to see a film any time soon because I love Who as a series and that would basically only happen if the show was no longer running.
Well, okay, I have seen the Cushing movies so there is a precedent, but times have changed...
I wouldn't mind a movie - with different characters/actors, after all - it would disrupt the TV series for a year or so!
They did it with Peter Cushing alongside William Hartnell back in 1966!
Someone like Ben Daniels could be the Doctor (not too young nor old) with companions like Tegan, Jamie and Victoria (just examples). Enemy could be a NEW monster for a change....and NO Timelords involved.
The Tardis would have to be a police box - the interior could be similar to the Classic console room - with rooms leading off in other directions.....

What if they did a movie using a previous Doctor? That way there could be a separate production team working on that project. and it wouldn't interrupt the normal Doctor Who schedule at all. Say Matt Smith with Amy/Rory doing a movie adventure which is one of their adventures during that episode when they were running around having huge adventures but being only gone for a few minutes from home. (I have forgotten the name of it, sorry.)

Having an earlier Doctor would be interesting. Forget Eccleston for a start!!
I'd like to see a 'classic' Doctor in a big-style movie (which they never had chance to do with their original cardboard sets!). Peter Davison is about the only one feasible to do this....and maybe with my lovely mouth-on-legs Tegan, Peri and Turlough to join in....or simply get new actors to play the companions.

The logical choice for classic Doctors would be McGann. The big budget movie could actually show a lot of what went on in the Time-War, it would tie everything back in nicely to Night of The doctor and it would give him a really nice reprisal of the role. It could really work.

McCoy has very famously been in The Hobbit movies.
Eccleston has been in a few movies; Shallow Grave being my favorite
Tennant was in Harry Potter.
(And, of course, the late Hartnell was in a bunch of movies like Carry On, Sergent and Pertwee was in one of my favorite movies A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.)
