Mark Ronson:- I had considered Janelle Monae to sing Uptown Funk
Barry_Clarke

He said when the song was first created he had thought of putting a female lead on the song, however he then decided to go with Bruno Mars as he brought so much energy and charisma to the song. Asked who would he had thought on as the female lead, there is only one female who IMO could bring that should and funk to uptown funk and that was Janelle Monae, she might be on my album on another song though,

Is this another one of your made up rumours like your 'Fleurs winners song was All For You by Janet but Janet wouldn't give the rights away, or your 'Fleur to do death defying stunt in XF final to JLO song' or is this true? If true, this would have blew her up in the UK. She hasn't yet made impact here.

Well Mr Ronson made the wrong choice then. Selecting Janelle Monae would have been a much more inspired, leftfield choice than boring Mars.
It's interesting though as I always thought the song, and particularly the lyrics, had a certain female sass like it was intended to be performed by a female singer.

His chart position the past couple of weeks will beg to differ with your statement that he 'made the wrong choice'

Not entitrely the song itself is whats selling it not Mars. Of course he had a considerable fanbase but theres no indication that anything other than the song itself has bern the driving force selling it.

Exactly, it's that kind of song that would have been a hit regardless of who featured on it.
Which is why it's a shame he played it safe in Mars and didn't give someone else the much needed exposure.

My view is of course affected by having heard Fleur's performance first but I don't think Bruno Mars put much energy into it. Fleur sang it with much more enthusiasm. To me, the original track seems more like a weak cover!

I would have loved to have heard Janelle Monae on that song.

I couldn't imagine Janelle singing on it. The song is fitting and suitible to Mars as an artist and his vocals.

Is there any truth to this at all? A quick google of "Mark Ronson Janelle Monae" shows this very thread as the first result. Nothing on Twitter about it either

Mars, also should've known better. He has released a few decent songs, and now he's associated with this pile of old cobblers.

Seriously, the only good thing about it is the horn section, and that kind of thing is easily sampled. The rest is like a very poor imitation of what KC and the Sunshine Band were doing so much better in the 70's and 80's. Another problem is the personality free presence of Ronson, who always comes across like a tailor's dummy, desperately trying to be cool.

For a song that's such a tribute to the great days of soulful funk, it's absolutely soulless and by the numbers.

Yes, that's it exactly. There is no spark of originality, and zero real emotion in the song. At least with stuff such as 'That's the Way I Like It' (either version) 'Queen of Clubs' and 'Give it Up' there was an in-built joyousness. Ronson and co are the reverse of this, and he'd have been better off allowing the X-Factor woman to have the hit. At least she sounded like she meant it.

It's like Rapper's delight crossed with Captain Sensible's Wot. A spoof of early hip hop's repetitiveness.

Yes, and they're still getting away with it, too. I am surprised at how fawning the media have been, when many of their number must know the truth.

Its not a bad song, certainly not the worst, but I have to turn off radio pop music channels etc as they feel the need to play it 3 times an hour which has ruined it for me.

If I'm going to get into it it'll be in 3+ years when the hypes died down, just like these songs

Shiver - Natalie Imbrulia
This Love - Maroon 5
I've got a feeling - black eyed peas

I wish this song would just funk off.

Janelle would've made it more tolerable though.

I think Ronson wanted someone who could sing and dance like Michael Jackson to try and get the same success as Love Never Felt So Good

Why have Bruno Mars on it then?

It's one of the best pop songs in years imo. And I can't stand either Mark or Bruno.

he should have actually got Morris Day involved on the song somehow...clearly influenced by him.

For some reason, Bruno has been trying to emulate MJ a lot over the last year or two. Imo, it's pathetic, more than it is a charming tribute.
