For something great yet undiscovered

albums that you adore but they didn't make the top 40 last year ....

albums that can be a welcome discovery in January 2015 and beyond....

One of my favourite albums of the year was MO - No Mythologies to Follow. Really catchy alt/pop. Tove Lo - Queen of the Clouds was awesome too.

For fans of cheesy girl group pop, I'd recommend Sweet California's album Break Of Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yFGmHav8LU

For fans of Scandinavian pop, Die Another Day by Beatrice Eli: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR-l84GS7xk

For pure pop fans, Heart Beats by Dami Im: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGcFsXmisQQ

Danity Kane are probably too well known to be here, but as they missed the Top 40 I think they deserve a mention for DK3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ikx4jPjIewE

Same for Azealia Banks and Broke With Expensive Taste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtTjzDTpx8o

How do you find all these albums? I used to look at the 'new releases' rack in Woolworth and Our Price - but those have gone. I could listen to random music and hope I find something I like but that is hardly professional is it?

She is an amazing talent and brilliant live, and having met her a lovely person as well.

I would also add:

Blues Pills - Blues Pills
The Cadillac Three - Tenessee Mojo
In This moment - Black Widow
The Tea Party - The Ocean At The End
Xandria - Sacrificium
Epica - The Quantum Enigma

Does it count if the album peaked at number 40?

If yes, my vote (and favourite album of last year) goes to 'The London Sessions' from Mary J Blige.

It's a genuinely stunning album. I don't pretend to own her albums, but it's definitely the best of those I own.
Her voice just gets better with age.

Lucky you! She is great. Who would have thought that a blonde, white girl from Birmingham could play the blues like that!

I know. Even though she's spent a lot of time in America her underlying accent is still there is you listen carefully.

I saw her in December, it was the first time I'd seen her live and, wow, can she play!! I met her afterwards and said her guitar playing was very reminicent of Stevie Ray Vaughan, who I was lucky enough to see in 1983. It turns out he is one of her heroes so we hit it off straight away then!! She only spoilt it by saying she was four when he died in 1990 - that made me feel very old!!

But if you ever get the chance to meet her, take it as she is very modest about her talents and a really lovely person.

Hopefully I'll get around to picking up the Peven Everett, Shaun Escoffery and maybe Omar at some point.

I can't think of any albums I bought in 2014 that were released in 2014. Probably there were some though!

If you have a HMV near you, check out their 'HMV Recommends' display, there's usually a lot of interesting non-chart titles you'd find there. I discovered quite a lot from there like

Boy & Bear - Harlequin Dream
Sharon Jones & The Dap KIngs - Give the People What They Want
Jhené Aiko - Souled Out
How to Dress Well - What is this Heart?
Laura Mvula - With Metropole Orkest
Tinashe - Aquarius
Lamb - Backspace Unwind
Hercules & Love Affair - The Feast of the Broken Heart
Josh Record - Pillars
Bernhoft - The Islander
Sean Escoffery - In the Red Room
Sivu - Something on High
