Id like to replace our BT HH5 with our own router, moving from Virgin i know i could allways stick that in Modem Only mode and be away, but from what i understand the HH5 don't have this feature.

Could i get an open reach modem from Ebay and use that and attach my own router to this? Would any setup be needed and is there a particular model i would need?

Unless I am picking you up wrong could you not just disable wifi on the home hub and connect your router to a ethernet port?

You can do what you suggested by getting an OR modem from eBay, this is what I did so I could use my own router.

You just need to configure the new router to connect via PPPoE and enter your username and password, which for BT are:

Username - bthomehub@btbroadband.com
Password - bt

I have found since getting Infinity the HH5 constantly drops connection for me, while my own router the Asus RT-AC68U has not dropped a connection now in the last 3 days.
I'm keeping hold of the HH5 just in case I need to contact BT, as they will require some stats from the router when troubleshooting.

The modem I bought was the HG612 3B.

You could however use your own router with the HH5, but to use it as a router, you would need to set up its connection as Dynamic IP or equivalent. No username or password will be required for this like you needed for PPPoE.

If the DHCP range of your own router runs on the network IP range 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 same as the HH5.
You would need to change this, so its different.
I ran like this for a while with my own router on 192.168.2.1 - 192.168.2.254.
This worked for me and allowed me to still use 3rd party DNS on my router.

With the constant connection dropouts from the HH5, I then decided to get the OR modem. You might not have this with yours, as many people haven't had the dropout issue with their HH5.

For routers to use, as I said I use an Asus, but I have used Dlink with original firmware and dd-wrt and a TP-link on my Infinity connection and they all worked.
