In my opinion, I think the divide comes from Katie H's egocentric behaviour. Egocentric nothing to do with being egotistical but to do with the lack of ability to empathize with or accept ideas and viewpoints that doesn't fit into her world view. She said it herself that everything to her is black or white.
The thing with Katie H is that she is bright and can therefore articulate and represent her views in witty and even convincing ways. In addition, her views may tap into what the majority may believe.
A broad example would be Katie H making a statement like, "I like milk chocolate but abhor black and white chocolate. They should ban them. Anyone who likes black or white chocolate obviously have something wrong with them."
The statement will divide the audience into 3 categories:
- There are a lot (maybe even the majority of people) who like milk chocolate and dislike the others and thus will agree with the first part of Katie H's statement, but have no opinion or put little weight to the rest of her statement. Basically they care little about black/white chocolate lovers or if it gets banned.
- However there are others who may agree with Katie H's first sentence but strongly disagree with the rest because they believe it marginalizes those that might actually like black/white chocolate. These people are, in Katie H's view, the lefties.
- And then there are those who actually prefer black/white chocolate over milk. These are the people who have a real problem with Katie H. These people in Katie H's eyes are wrong and have no place in this world.
I think this is how Katie H divides the audiences. People that love her will say things like, "She's saying what we're all thinking." People that despise her, "No, what she is saying is vile and unfair."
My two cents.
