Perez's use of "chola"?
SuperCheese
27-01-2015
This isn't just another Perez bashing thread but why is his constant use of the word "chola" when referring to Cami Li not been raised as an issue by BB?

I'm fairly certain it's deemed offensive? I remember Lady Gaga getting a lot of stick for it when she released 'Born This Way'. Doesn't it refer to Latino gang culture or something along those lines?

Because it's a nickname she uses herself and others have referred to her as btw not a perez fan before I get accused of that

NO, it's not offensive because Cami refers to herself as Chola and Patsy calls her Chola too.
It's used to refer to a Female Gang Boss.

I didn't realise that Patsy called it Her, but surely referring to yourself as something is different? For example, many bloack people refer to themselves as "******" and many gay people refer to themselves as "faggot" but it does not mean that it's ok for others to say this? Just a question.

She seems to relish in the fact she's a chola.
I think Perez is mocking her referring to herself as such.
Also hard for her to be a gang boss when she moved to the UK to be with that TOWIE fella and now BB scraped the very bottom of the barrel and hired her.

Michelle calls her that sometimes doesn't she? And Cami seems to like it. He's just making fun of that I guess.

I beg to differ

Being totally and utterly wrong doesn't help either.

You should have phoned a friend.

It's not offensive because its Perez, and even if you DO find it offensive I'm pretty sure as Nadia would attest, its you fault for not ignoring it.

It's not offensive because the majority of the house call her that as well as herself.

Is she a chola or is she a nice middle class girl acting chola?

If she is a nice girl, then Perez could be using it as to take the piss on many levels. Perez's genius works on many levels.

No idea what chola means and have no inclination to look it up. It sounds nice.....like cola. Except not coca-cola. Cami-chola.

this is why no word should really be deemed offensive people's words should be accepted with the intent and context they are used and not by the content for example my friend calls me a fag all the time do I find this offensive? No of course not because there is no offence intended but if someone says it to me in a derogatory way in say an argument then there is offence intended

I think BB let it slide because they don't really get what it actually means, in the states it can be used as a racial slur towards anyone with mixed race, Latinos, native Americans etc. its also used to describe people from gang cultures and the hip hop scene. Its very similar to the use of the N word ending with an A isn't as bad as ending with a ER but even the use of the word ending with A in BB would have resulted in outrage.

Whoa! People get far too personal on these forums! It was a fair question, and all you have to do it Google the word to see that some people do find it offensive. The intent of the word isn't really a valid argument as if it were a word that was seen as more 'offensive' in the UK, such as fag or the 'n' word, then it would be a warning or removal straight up (like that girl, Emily I think her name was when BB was on C4).

I don't dispute that other housemates may have said it, I just haven't noticed before but last week he said it a good 5 times when in his 'secret' room.

In a nutshell, it believe it's a latina equivalent to calling someone a "gangsta". If they consider you a peer or friend it's a compliment. If aren't their peer or friend, it's typically considered demeaning. Basically, if someone gives you permission to use it, then it's the first thing. If they don't...

(for that matter, if we are comparing it to black urban culture, even the N-word, the version ending in "a" operates like that occasionally)
