Apparently an offensive term to describe a latino female.

Please, not another thread about the use of the word chola. It is seen by some as a derogatory term, but Cami has chosen to refer to herself as a chola. HMs refer to her as chola because she likes the term. Perez should not be reprimanded for calling her a term she uses herself. Can we put this one to bed now?

She probably has no clue what it actually means. Perez will know exactly what it means, coming from America.

That argument just doesn't stack up. Some black people use the N word. That doesn't mean it's acceptable for someone to use that word.

Clearly Perez is using it an offensive way.

Doesn't Cami know what it means She calls herself it. That's why Patsy does though in an endearing way and why Perez does but in a sarcastic way.

I hope so. All the -ing on here over Perez calling her the nickname she actually uses herself was pathetic.
It's not a racist word.

Perez is usually being negative when he says it. It's not as if him and Cami are having a laugh and he says it in a playful way. He uses it as a negative way to refer to her.

indeed. It doesn't have the sting in the UK that it carries in the US but it's loaded with all the shit that's flung at UK white working class girls like Josie Cunningham for being slappers, we're getting close to the prejudice that the word chola carries, but it's racialised. Chola means 'dog'.

Cami calls herself it and was happy for Patsy to call her it. Perez used it sarcastically because as I say Cami uses it herself.

It wouldn't matter if it meant 'hedgehog on stilts'. It's what Cami uses as her nickname.

I said that he was using it sarcastically BUT that doesn't make it racist. It either is or it isn't racist and how it's being said is irrelevant. Cami happily uses it, Patsy is allowed to use it on BOTS so it must be an acceptable term.

Cholo for men, chola for women. It's a term commonly used on LA streets when referring to Lantinos that act, dress, or are gangster. A bit like the word chav, only some wear it like a badge of honour. It's only derogatory when you refer to an everyday, middle-class Latino as a cholo/chola because you're racially implying that just because they're Latino they must be a gang member (lots of Latino street gangs in LA).

If you pay attention to LA based crime/gang movies like TRAINING DAY, END OF WATCH, STREET KINGS etc or TV shows that follow LA cops, you'll understand how the term is used.

There both Latinos, so understand all uses of this term. Perez is ridiculing her because she chooses and is proud to be referred to as a chola because she thinks she is bad ass. She wants to be seen as a chola, it's part of her image. Let's not forget that Cami refers to most people, including herself, as 'bitch'. There have been extensive threads about this, why are we starting another discussion. Cami wants to be called Chola - Perez and other HMs call her Chola. Calum called her gordita, which means little pig - but in some Latin American countries it is a term of endearment. Relax!!

Yep. Think this is right. My earlier comment was about showing it can be derogatory when racialised or refer to class.
