How does that work? What does she know about them that they don't know themselves? What does she know about them that she can explain to other people that they can't explain themselves?

Why does she think they need her? What will she say to intelligent gay people who feel embarrassed that she even claims to be associated with them?

Little wonder that she associates herself with the single most utterly vile and hypocritical oxygen thief in the house.

Rant over.

She's a liar. She is playing the gay community and the British public. She is just sucking up.

When it comes to civil rights in the states it takes a coalition of people to change hearts, minds and laws. It was liberal (but really a centrist) Bill Clinton that signed DADT and DOMA. Michelle is an American where people can still fired or evicted for coming out.

Her view, her fight, and her cause is right, no doubt about it. But, it isn't HER fight. She's a straight, married women. The problem i have is she tries to use the 'fight' to her advantage in CBB. She hasn't been persecuted, she hasn't had the worry of coming out to family, she hasn't been looked at funny cos she's 'different'. So her self righteousness, HER so called 'fight' seems a little ridiculous tbh.

I respect her for fighting the cause, don't get me wrong. But it's a little insulting how she tries to make the 'fight' her own. It's not!

Surely anyone fighting a cause is good irregardless of their background??????? Did no whites March for black equality etc?

She's champion to no-one but herself.

Useless housemate also.

You don't have to be gay to be an ally or advocate for LGBT issues. Plenty of straight women have become gay icons and outspoken advocates of LGBT equality.

I honestly don't see how the concept is so difficult to grasp.

Eh, you can be but it's not common for it to happen. The US has come a very long way in a fairly short time. You can get married in 70% of the country (soon to be the whole country) and LGBT rights is at an all time high. FYI, LGBT rights in Europe isn't all encompassing either. There are still some pretty big differences within the EU.

100% agreed.

But who is she to say Perez is letting down the LGBT community?

I respect her for her advocation, but i don't respect her for using it against someone. Her saying Perez has put back 'years of hard work' and 'fighting' for LGBT people is way over the top!

Just because she doesn't like him, whos saying other wont?

Her campaign to support LGBT rights is regardless of her sexuality. Her campaign to be a spokesperson is equally regardless.

Her campaign to be regarded as THE spokesperson is questionable.

Doesn't this thread kind of highlight the flaws in attitudes towards LGBT? Why shouldn't a straight person fight for equality of it's what they feel passionate about. Wouldn't that just be another level of discrimination that the LGBT community are trying to fight against?

I think it's laudable for people to fight for struggles that aren't really their own. The problem with Michele is that she does it in such a condescendingly patronising way that puts herself at centre stage rather than the people she's supposedly campaigning for. It's all about her representing 'the gays' whether they like it or not. How they are gaining from her representing them in the house is a complete mystery of course cos she's never explained why or what her presence is doing to benefit them - she's just full of the kind of empty slogans she wears on her crappy t-shirts, there's no meaningful substance or depth to anything she has to say whatsoever...

'Vote for me cos I like the gays. Well some of the gays. Not all the gays. Not the kind of gays that are gay in a way the homophobes might hate. I'm not representing them. Those gays are way too gay for me to represent. Don't lump me in with those gays. Those gays might cost me votes.'

she's using it for the game, and that kinda detracts from what she claims to be.

supportive of gays, but not the type of gay like perez. Double standard, discriminatory, and inappropriate.

I find this hetrophobic in suggesting a straight person has less rights than a gay person to fight a cause they believe in....I'm outraged....where the hell is Nadia and her direct line to the chief of police when you need her!! :P

Honestly, like or dislike someone. Discuss the programme. But stop with finding these excuses to moan about someone just to have a reason to start a thread...about something which has already been discussed time and time again!

Do you not think, in this day and age. That 'labeling' someone because of their sexuality is really quite ridiculous? WE ARE ALL PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who cares, no one should. I hate this 'he's a gay' BS. There should be no difference if you like women, men, or no one. (not ranting at you, just saying ).

She brought up Perez's being gay as an issue. SHE was putting back the LGBT community by making his sexuality an issue. Not the other way round!

Again - Julesc i know im quoting you, and im agreeing. Not ranting against you, rather in favour of the BIB.

Are you saying that gay people who openly label themselves as gay are ridiculous then? I would doubt either you or I have given as much support to the LGBT community as she has

There are a lot of people out there who would disagree. But that isn't the debate. Why can't a straight person be a champion for a cause relating to LGBT? If it's all about equality then why would anyone be offended since as quoted above we're all the same???

Michelle is a champion of equalities. That means, for the many of you who don't understand, she believes that every person, regardless of gender, sexuality, colour or ability is equal in the eys of the law. We all have a responsibility to campaign for equal rights for all. You can hardly criticise a woman for being brave and standing up for a marginalised group of people.

If you still don't get it - I stand up for the Palestinians and their cause. I'm not Palestinian. It doesn't make me a bad person or my cause any less my cause.
