I'm 38 and do seem to remember that.

It did break records indeed, but i guess the problem for me in this thread was the opening sentence which unfortunately has opened this thread right up to what has always happened!
The opening sentence reflects several views that have been put across on this forum. Last time I checked, this was a discussion forum.

I assumed those who had cast doubt in the past would join the thread and simply acknowledge they were wrong.

However, I will point out again that (apart from AW) no market analyst had predicted the level of sales that have been reported and therefore this is very newsworthy.

It's not nonsense at all. If when British Gas/BT/SKY announced their last profits and i started a thread in an attempt to gloat about it, i would be absolutely ridiculed!!

It is quite sad people do this over a company who really doesn't give 2 hoots about you!
re BIB

I can't speak for kidspud, but what makes you think it was to gloat?

I didn't read it as that at all. I'd say the context was more about how surprising these results are given how many column inches (including on these forums) have been dedicated to how badly Apple is doing, how they are a company in decline, how much things have gone downhill since Jobs left etc etc.

Why does:

That Apple have posted such huge results given that they are supposed to be going to hell in a hand basket is kinda interesting.

get interpreted (somewhat childishly IMO) as:

I'm so proud of my beloved Apple doing so well I thought I'd gloat about it here.

Maybe if people hadn't spent the last however many months wanging on about how badly Apple are supposedly doing, the fact that that doesn't seem to be the case at all might not be so noteworthy.

Maybe if people had spent months going on about how much trouble British Gas/BT/SKY were in before they announced record breaking profits, that fact would be just as noteworthy as it is with Apple. If not, then your comparison seems moot.

Next quarter (Q1 CY2015) will be one to watch. Lets just hope Apple didn't pull a Microsoft on us.

Not that I think they did, just will need to be cautious when looking at how this quarter will turn out.

Apple have provided guidance for the next quarter. Recently it has been pretty accurate (they use to underestimate).

Ah, of course you do! The very 2 companies i pulled from a hat
Sure - if they were completely random as opposed to two high profile privatisations where many people who had not bought shares previously, bought shares.

Which, I'd say, increases the odds significantly.

And that guidance does show revenue dropping YOY overall.

But in the case above I was talking specifically about iPhone shipments.

Thing is, people say that about large companies all the time. Something i completely ignore since it has no bearing on my life whatsoever. You, i and the sensible ones know fine the results for this year would be exceptionally good and that apple are a looong way from doomed!

But the reason for this thread was just simply to start what's happened now. The opening sentence shows this. This will go on for about 80 pages full of Kid, CP, sword and alan going back and forth trading insults until the mods close it.
Or even:

full of Kid and CP putting up with sword and alan until the mods close the thread.

Alan I don't always follow, but out of those four names I'd say there is only one who hurls the insults around.

Hang on. I do not want thread closed or posters banned (I thought he just went on holiday).

They just provide comedy and banning is taking things far too seriously.

Very true, much like in the real world you have to be careful even in DS not be too critical of Apple. Strangely I have seen posters wishing others posters to die and get hit by trains and not be banned.

If you were banned, it wasn't for being critical of Apple.

Who is wishing people dead or hit by trains?

And unless you do have shares in this, its pretty much non news worthy. Its only news worthy to people like you who like to gloat even though it has zero effect on you whatsoever.
Not newsworthy. How come it was the lead on the BBC news website (not the tech section) this morning ahead of all other world news ?

And by the way, we all know that the "gloaters" (to quote Black Adder) would be out in much greater force had the news been the other way - and they have even less reason to be interested as they don't use Apple products.

Ah, an irrelevant skin (all the same to me) and you do not like O2.

And BTW O2 just got the 'most reliable' accolade and 'highest customer satisfaction rating' of them all.
So O2 can't really be all bad.
O2 is crap

They made the 6pm news on the BBC as well. One interesting stat from the Beeb reporter, Apple made as much profit in 3 months that Tesco make in 10 years!

It doesn't matter if it has been reported on the news, presumably because they think it is newsworthy on account of it being the biggest quarterly profit ever made by any company, ever.

If anyone mentions it here it can only be because they love Apple, and are somehow gloating. No other possible explanation.

The title of this thread is wrong. It should say "Apple sold 74.5M iPhones in Q4 2014".

Well spotted. My mistake (unless I've just managed to see into the future).

In fact, it could just as easily be for the opposite reason - people who dislike what Apple stand for and their increasingly crazy market leading "style over substance at crazy prices" position. I mean, their supposedly high tech stuff doesn't even have SD card or Micro SD card slots for simple and cheap memory expansion, how CRAZY is that, that people stiill get sucked in. <shakes head disbelieveingly>

But of course, on this occasion, it was in fact started by an Apple fanboi-style post that's oddly ever so pleased that Apple users are paying over the odds for their lacking-in-basic-expansion-slot devices in order to generate such huge profits. Strange logic.

Have you finished with the edits now?

You managed to read an awful lot into my OP. You are clearly one of the more perceptive Anti-Apple brigade

Oh, you clearly hadn't finished

I think your valuation of an sd slot is a little over exaggerated.

Yes I have finished.

But my SD card slot comments follow a request from younger family members recently who wanted help to upgrade their iphones and tablets to larger memory versions, at a cost of hundreds of pounds. One micro SD card slot would have solved the problem at a cost of less than £20. There must be millions of iphone/pad owners in much the same situation. Apple Proprietory Inc. definitely know how to make money but that doesn't necessarily make it a good thing for the consumer.

Then Apple devices are not for you. However, to suggest that Apple do not include it to bolster their profits seem a little silly.

It that why Google don't include them in their devices? Is that why Android has had SD card support removed?
