I was wondering if anyone had any hints or tips to stop a 18 month kitten/cat (?) being bored as I am at a loss!

We have a cat flap and although it took 5 long months, she finally cracked how to use it a couple of months back so she can go outside whenever she wants. I have noticed she bores more easily than our other 2 cats so I have brought a variety of cat toys which she refuses to play with and I even leave out paper bags as she loves rolling around in them and making them rustle!

When me or my partner try to play with her she either runs away or looks at us with disgust!

I am pretty sure she is bored because she runs around the house meowing, being naughty and ripping up any paper she sees, I have had her checked with the vet to make sure she isn't ill due to her constant meowing but all was ok!

Anyone else has this problem?

Get her a puppy ! Honestly only thing kept our late Ginny happy was when we got a puppy and they played together in ways our other cats wouldn't. Obviously only if you have right set up for a dog and time to walk and interact with it.

You know she likes paper, so try building on that. Make a paper tunnel for her. My cat loves batting ping-pong balls about but loves scrunched up paper balls even more as she can also grab those. You could build a cardboard box cat tower for her.

More seriously, perhaps, as she is still young she is just restless because she can be.

Maybe being the 'baby' of the cats she is finding it hard to find her place in the household moggy pecking order, and athromorphising (sp) somewhat here, she feels a bit insecure.

I'm sure with attention and affection she will calm down

Thanks for all your ideas, I would like a puppy but with 3 cats, a full time job and a baby on the way I kind of have my hands full at the moment!

I tried getting her to play with l some cardboard from the inside of the loo roll but to no avail!

Oh well at least I know I'm trying all I can, got to go now she needs recusing from the top of the fridge (please don't ask me why she can't get herself down!)

If they can get up, they can get down. Just out some food down, go away and do not make any noise/fuss. She will come down when she is ready.

Sounds to me like she is having a mad 5 mins, every cat I've ever had has done it and I just laugh and say 'oh you're going mad now are you' or something along those lines. Does she stop and look around and then run off as the very devil himself was after her?Mine do at times and I think it is hilarious.

Mine too. Currently only have one cat and although she's only 7 months old she's starting to show signs of slowing down. However, when she has her "mad half hour " its batten down the hatches as she crashes into things and flies through the air attempting jumps she really can't manage yet. If its a nice day most of this energy is spent in the garden but woe betide us when its raining. Fortunately she's made friends with a neighbours cat and yesterday we watched the two of them playing hide and seek with each other under a large plastic bag that had blown into the garden. The plus side to this madness is that she sleeps right through the night.

I'm sorry this isn't much help OP but the secret ( or their challenge for us! ) is to find what does amuse them. My girl has turned her nose up at every shop bought toy we bought much prefering a rolled up toffee wrapper when she was small progressing to a sheet of news paper as she got bigger. We try and make sure that she goes out for a couple of hours at least twice a day and even if there is nothing obvious to play with she'll amuse herself in the long grasses moving in the wind. Add to that food on demand and lots of attention and she's happy.

I'm surprised all the cat owners giving advice don't know about cats 'going mad from time to time', I don't know why, but I'm sure it's not boredom.
Even the op herself has 2 other cats.
And as for getting a puppy for a kitten...well I despair.

Cats who can go outside are fairly self-limiting when it comes to boredom. If they are bored, they will naturally roam further afield and explore and possibly meet other cats, and thus not be bored.

It might be different for a cat who is kept in as the ability to roam as far as it cares to is obviously curtailed. That's also why dogs can get bored - they are also tied down to being in one place.

I know. We got ours through cat protection and she came with loads of attitude, afraid of nothing and would stand her ground against anyone however big. She hated being petted and would bite and scratch when we tried to stroke her. Anyway, we've made loads of progress and she now enjoys being stroked and offers up her chin so we can stroke her throat area but we've still to cross the final hurdle of her laying back and enjoying having her tummy stroked. When I related this to the person who organised the 'adoption' she didn't have a clue what I meant despite having several cats herself and insisted on trying to touch her tummy. She just didn't understand the trust a cat is showing when it actually lays on its back, relaxes and exposes it tummy for petting.

I've also watched that American programme where the guy goes into peoples houses and sorts out troublesome cats and he nearly always starts with the closing eyes method to gain some trust yet the owners are oblivious to this behaviour.

It's all to do with observing them and their behaviour.
I've got a 7 year old lady and a 6 month old boy. I know my cat likes other cats but the kitten was too much for her because she is too old to play. She suffered from stress for a while so I kept them separated at night so she could have an uninterrupted nights sleep. He is such a laugh but she doesn't see the funny side. They do get on to an extent and like yours he is beginning to calm down.
My only problem is his great reluctance to go out side (he was neutered at 4 months).
If I put him out in the day he scratches, jumps up at the door and makes a noise like he is being murdered. Strangely he likes being out once it gets dark, but I don't want him to go out then.

My girl only goes out by choice if the weather is good or her friend is around otherwise we have to force her which we do unless it's really bad weather. She doesn't like it but soon finds something to stalk or explore. It usually means she's out in the dark for a little while but by 8 o' clock she's ready for bed.

I got one of these for my cat and he absolutely loved it for the twenty minutes it worked until the motor burned out. I have found that anything small and remote controlled moved up and down under a light sheet is cheaper, as enjoyable and lasts much longer!
As for the mad five minutes thing, for mine it's more like half an hour and he has no interest in playing, just tearing up and down frightening visitors!

I noticed in Lidl today they have a number of cat toys on offer including scratching posts and play tunnels. I didn't buy anything as my little horror turns her nose up at 'formal play' but I'm guessing being Lidl that they are competively priced.
