Free means free and other call charge changes from summer 2015

Some information from the regulator about the upcoming changes.

Ofcom's information campaign about these changes is called UK Calling - the website is:
www.ukcalling.info

Freephone numbers starting 0800 or 0808 will be free to call from mobiles. The changes also cover "all consumer calls to 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers across the UK".

Ofcom call these 'service numbers' - the future charging structure for calling these numbers from a consumer landline or mobile will work like this:

Quote:
“From summer 2015, the cost of calling service numbers will be made up of two parts:

* An access charge: This part of the call charge goes to your phone company, charged as pence per minute. They will tell you how much the access charge will be for calls to service numbers. It will be made clear on bills and when you take out a contract.

* A service charge: This is the rest of the call charge. The organisation you are calling decides this, and will tell you how much it is”

The ridiculously unfair advantage towards BT i.e. premium rate calls like to 0844, 0870, 0901 e g. where they say on adverts or competitions "this call costs x pence with BT, but call charges via other landlines and mobiles may vary" is being sorted out at the same time.

About time too. It's been like an unofficial promotion for BT fixed line telephone services all this long.

BT will lose a lot of customers who thought that BT were by far the cheapest for calling premium rate numbers from a landline where in reality they are one of the most expensive.
