The secret to Katie Hopkins success is that she mops up a lot of people in her vaguely anti-P.C agenda. She picks up:

People who hate political correctness.
People who believe that benefits claimants are undeserved.
People who yearn for the old days when life was simpler.
People who are full of hate and want to hurt others.
People who are annoyed they can't tell racist jokes anymore.
People who are right wing and believe that there is a liberal media conspiracy.
People who equate being horrible with being 'real' or 'honest'.

This adds up to a sizeable group of people. They believe Katie's victory would be 'one in the eye' for political correctness and would annoy the 'liberal elite'.

Jim Davidson won partly on an anti-PC ticket. The difference I believe, is that Jim was genuinely charismatic and amusing.

Helen Wood won on a 'be horrible and intimidating' ticket. Somehow that meant to many that she was more down to earth and honest than others.

Personally, I don't like Katie. Not so much because of her opinions, more because she's not half as clever as she thinks she is and not at all funny. She has made me cringe with her silly made-up persona and sigh at her lame attempts to be controversial.

However, by hitching herself to this UKIP-style, anti-PC, good old days, anti-liberal, pull-your-socks-up, bandwagon she has found a great way to win not only column inches and TV appearances, but also reality TV votes.

A very well balanced and reasonable post

I pretty much agree with the demographics you state she will appeal too, my only hope is that enough voters see through the facade and decide to pledge their votes to someone worthy like...

I have nothing against people wanting to make themselves feel better by convincing themselves that is true in any way

True. Which shows how stupid people are, she is pure PC. She works for the sun for goodness sake, the most PC paper on the market.

This is a rather opaque comment.

I can't believe Katie's supporters are all obesophobes. It's time for her her fat fans to stand up and be counted.

I think this thread pretty much says it all about why KH is so popular. Well deduced!

Absolutely.
Great well thought out post which sort of explains the Farage effect as well.
The thing is in reality both Farage and Hopkins are actually a lot more establishment than most but have both found a way to dress it up as anti establishment.

The sad thing about Hopkins is her whole status as celebrity and in the house is about surrounding herself with negativity, hatred, and rudeness...that is how she will be remembered when her 15 mins starts to fade.

I completely agree, sadly I think she will win. However I simply can't understand is how she went in on opening night with these "qualities" for which she received a lot of boos, fast forward to last night now she's a hero without changing a thing about her persona. I really don't get it!?

BB was over for me when Helen Wood won. If KH wins CBB will also be over for me.
All hope for the GBP gone for ever.

You have been rushed into hospital in an ambulance. You are about to give birth six weeks early. The midwife appears. Who do you want her to be - Katie or Nadia?

I think you'd really have to be living in a world of outraged tabloid to believe that a CBB winner tells a meaningful story about society at large.

Please. Some perspective.

People who don't like Perez will ignore her obnoxious behaviour and vote for her, Just the same as highly-strung Linda Nolan won the show for bad-tempered Jim Davidson.

OP, while your points are well and good, and quite true; why are you insinuating anti-PC opinion is bad?

To be fair, she has shown a softer side, that several Hms have commented on.
