Hi first post here, looking for some advice. It's a long post but bear with me!

I took my iPhone 5 into my local repair shop (who advertise as an iPhone specialist) to ask for a replacement battery to be fitted, as the battery life was poor. The shop advised me that it could be an issue with the charging port and they could test the phone first. I was in a hurry so I instructed them to replace the battery and if they were correct about the charging port I would have them fix that too, as a new battery couldn't hurt. Cost £40

I collected the phone and everything seemed fine. I ran the battery down to empty and plugged the phone in to charge - however, it wouldn't charge at all now, or turn back on.

I returned the phone to the shop who after having it for a couple of days told me there could be a fault on the motherboard and that they would look at it. I left it with them. When I went back to collect the phone which all powered up fine as they said, I paid them £20 and went on my way.

BUT... I looked down at the phone and realised there was NO SIGNAL!! The phone recognises that there is a SIM card but will not connect.

I've taken it back to them for the THIRD TIME, they deny any wrong doing or liabilty, tell me they can't find the fault and repair it and that it needs a new motherboard, equal to the cost of the phone.

I've said this seems a little but odd, as the phone didn't have this fault before, but they insist that it is purely coincidental.

They have said that if I give them another £60 they will give me a replacment re-conditioned handset. If I agree, I'll have paid out £120 and have a re-conditioned phone that isn't my one. Absolutely gutted.

Before I go into the shop for an arguement, I would like to know the thoughts of others on this. I think they've broken it, but before I argue my case I would like the opinions of people who know more than I do!

Sorry for the very long post!!! Thanks in advance.

Was it an official Apple approved place you took it into, or was it one of those shops that do unlocking and have about a million cheap phone cases on display in the window? Hate to say it (and sh!t on independent businesses) but it sounds like they have bungled the repair/fitted sh!te parts which has caused more problems than it has fixed.

Firstly - did you know that there is a known battery issue with iPhone 5. Apple are offering free battery replacement on affected models. Details are on the Apple website and can be checked by entering your serial number. Mine was one of the affected batches and I had my battery replaced within an hour in an Apple Store. This is why I'm certain that the OP did not use an Apple Store as I know that his experience would have been very different.

I now no longer need to charge my phone twice a day. Sorry if it appears that I'm closing the stable door after the horse has bolted but hopefully it will help other DS members.

Sound like you got ripped off by a backstreet phone repair shop.

Should have gone to an official repair store or an Apple Store.

Having got into this position, you could try arguing with them and take them to a small claims court.

Yep there are a few like that near me. Situated next to the E-Cigarette shops too!

Most of these aren't even shops, just kiosks or the corner of another shop. Cannot really trust these sort of places for repairs. Even their tacky gel cases are overpriced!
