A blue whale isn't history. It's still with us.

Well the blue whale whose bones they will be suspending from the ceiling is certainly history.

To the contrary, I have no doubt that anti-science creationists have greeted the replacement of a dinosaur skeleton with a whale skeleton with glee and they are no doubt hopeful that their ongoing donations to the Natural History Museum will eventually result in the replacement of the whale skeleton by a replica Noah's Ark.

That is why this issue is important.

You say that without even knowing what the associated displays and information will be. It's likely that there will be much information on the evolution of whales, which, as I pointed out earlier, annoys creationists a lot more than dinosaurs.

There are creationists, remember, who believe that humans rode dinosaurs like horses, in the Garden of Eden. And that theropod dinosaurs, like T. rex, ate plants before Adam and Eve sinned.

Creationists are best dealt with by allowing them to come out, spout their nonsense, and then showing them up for the idiots they are. If this emboldens them; bring them on. Let them make fools of themselves.

I cannot believe that the ********s at the Natural history museum are saying that it will take a month to dismantle a plastic replica of a dinosaur. I'd have that done in days.
As for cleaning and looking at footage of a woman with an artist brush dusting the damn thing down, how bloody pathetic is that. You ever heard of a compressor and an air blower. And it's not like you are trying to preserve anything delicate, it's plastic for f#'k sake. You could probably quite easily 3d print replicas for twice as many venues that you are showing at in a day.
I have to question how many meetings have been held, how many cups of tea and coffee consumed and how many biscuits and chocolate snacks consumed just to make people feel important about their pointless overpaid jobs , where people are bloody pointless just to discuss pointless shit that one sensible person with the sense that he/she was born with could probably make the same decision in seconds saving £millions of pounds that is probably taxpayers money. Get off the f#'king bus freeloaders and time wasters. People are dying out there, children for god's sake. get real about a plastic f#'king dinosaur. can't wait to get my vlog started. so much to abuse and take the piss out of.

This is ill informed nonsense from start to finish. For starters they have already 3d scanned Dippy and hundreds of other exhibits, including some which are not on public display. It's also plaster, not plastic.
You are aware that the NHM is a self funded /charity organisation? The jobs aren't pointless either. At any rate taxpayers not involved.

As I have said before iconic it may be but Dippy is the most overrated exhibit in the museum.

For a start for decades it was stated to be 27 metres long - it's not it's actually only 21.3 and is merely the cast of a sub-adult anyway (adults were over 30 metres). The replica is tiny compared to the largest sauropods, just over a third of their length and at an estimated 13 tons when alive only around a tenth of the mass (it's close relative Barosaurus has recently been found to be over 50 metres long as an adult for example).

There were plenty of super-giant sauropods they could have ordered to replace it rather than the Blue whale.

A lot of fuss over nothing in my humble opinion.

I would rather have seen a cast of 'Sue' here - the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex in the world - 12.3 metres and ten metric tons of walking death incarnate.

Any prehistoric exhibit would be excellent..... I keep forgeting that we have dinostar. But, get feeling that place as just been knocked up on the cheap.

Never been in - looks tacky and cheap to me.

I agree that any prehistoric exhibit would be nice and as I say any cast of a super-sauropod (like the 37 metre long Titanosaur in the American Museum of Natural History) would make for awe-inspiring viewing.

I couldn't see a thread on this, nor does the search function seem to be working properly, but I wondered what people's thoughts were on this...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-31025229

It's very rare for me to disagree with investment in new ideas for museums, and I know the Central Hall has a history of a turnaround when it comes to its main attraction, but this is such an iconic staple of the museum's history!

Whilst the Blue Whale is a very impressive animal, and it's a good thing to raise awareness of the giants alive today, the fact is that dinosaurs evoke something in the imagination that a mammal never will - especially for a child.

It'll be such a shame to see the Diplodocus go. As a Natural History Museum, there are certain aspects that I feel don't need to be updated or modernised. It seems such a big fuss over a load of (replicated) bones but this is an icon that I'll miss for sure.
Can't say that a diving posture whale will enhance anything, nor anyone. They should leave Dippy where he is, or move him beside the whale which would give more enhancement for viewers. To dismiss Dippy as if he wasn't important is crass ignorance.

You might have to. It's taken him almost four years to summon up the enthusiasm to write his first post on the forum.

They're getting a new bronzed version to place in the front gardens, which they are going relandscape to look more primeval.
