DVD HDD - External DVD
Is it possible to connect up an external DVD rewriter to my DVD Recorder?
I can't see a way unless you can use adaptors that will let me connect via scart as their are no USB or any other connections that I would think are usable on the back. One of my DVD Recorders DVD Drives no longer wants to record at high speed. Currently having a DVD recording from the HDD in real time so we'll see if it does record at the end of the 2 hours but at high speed it just says cannot dub. It can read/play DVD's alright though. |

If you mean something like a DVD burner that you would plug into a computer via USB then no. Even if there were a USB port on the recorder it is unlikely it would be able to drive a DVD burner, most such ports are only set up to handle hard disk or flash drives.
Anything that would plug into a SCART socket will only allow real time copying. As the only thing that will come out of the SCART is analogue audio and Video. That would have to be converted to digital then something would have to feed the digitised signal to the burner. But whatever you used it would not be possible to do high speed copying. Chances are if you take the recorder apart you'll find a computer type DVD drive in there anyway. I've certainly used CD recorders that are like that. However you have to be careful. The manufacturers of the CD recorders I've used modified the firmware of the drive. So even though you could get the exact same model of drive from any number of sources they wouldn't work due to the modified firmware, which there was no way to get from the manufacturer. Which was a royal pain when a drive failed on a recorder. I could still buy the standard drive but the recorder manufacturer no longer provided the modified version. Which was fine for them as instead of 20-30 quid on a drive I had to spend 200 quid on a new recorder! Barstewards!!

Ah.
Thanks for the reply. I didn't think it would be possible but thought I would ask. The real time recording worked, so for some reason the high speed recording is the issue all of a sudden. When I record in real time though, it knocks out the whole TV and I have to sit through what is recording. Pressed lots of buttons on TV and DVD remote to try and not do this, but to no avail. I just want it now to record in real time if it has too, but watch the TV whilst it is doing it! That's a bummer re: your DVD Drive and having to get a new Recorder. I would have to do the same so whilst it still has some use with real time recording.... |

It should be possible to switch the TV away from the SCART input the recorder is plugged into. There should also be a setting in the menu to turn off the SCART control that causes the TV to auto switch to that input when the recorder is active..
And if that doesn't work just yank the SCART lead out the back of the telly once the copy has kicked off. Or take a pair of pliers to a SCART lead and break off pin 8 which carries the switching signal. (do it when unplugged both ends though) Doesn't matter which end the missing pin plug is connected to. |

I tried all the options on the TV but it kept going back to the DVD and tried changing the input on the DVD, before and after starting the copy. Quote:

I'll try the yanking the scart lead out first.

Wow! How much? You must be seriously into that to buy something that costs that much - or have a few pounds to spare, or in your case, work pays
