I bought a Sony KDL-40HX723 several years ago and luckily it came with a free 5 year guarantee, as it now has lines across the screen and needs a replacement panel. Sony have told me the part is not available, but they will offer me an exchange TV which would be a KDL-42W829B. Other than the obvious small size increase, is there much difference between this and my current TV? Obviously any improvement is great (i.e. I think the new one would have built in wifi whereas my current doesn't), but just want to check I'm not loosing any features or "taking a step back" as it were, in respect of features or quality of picture/sound etc.

Thanks

We've recently done the same for a customer here, he was VERY happy with the exchange, and as you noted the new TV is a 'smart' one.

Decent swap, nice result.

BTW, the new set comes pre-registered with Sony, and guaranteed until the end of the original 5 year guarantee - not a new 5 year guarantee.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to receiving it!

Common for the panel to go on the HX723 or just bad luck? I have a friend who has one (with a shorter warranty that she is now out of), so she's a bit worried same might happen to hers.

The largest failure on Sony TV's is (by FAR!) the LCD panel - however, this is only because of almost zero failures in the rest of the set. The actual failure rates are EXTREMELY small - we've only had four warranty jobs (all wanting panels, and one an HX723) in the last few months, and we've got thousands of sets out there under 5 year warranties.

That's good then, thanks

Our last TV was a Sony and we only replaced it because it was 12 years old, it still worked perfectly, so hopefully this will be the one-and-only problem we'll have. I always recommend them to friends, so I'd feel terribly responsible if the same thing failed on my friend's TV.
