I see that The Libertines have been announced as the first headliner for this year's T in the Park music festival, and are also strongly rumoured to be headlining Reading & Leeds. There seems to be a lot of debate elsewhere online as to whether this is a fantastic booking, or a complete waste of a headline spot. Thoughts??

Personally I never got the fuss over this band, they are very average musicians IMO and only released two albums. Add in Pete Doherty's unreliability and I don't think they really deserve top billing at two of the biggest events in the music calendar, but can appreciate that for fans this is great news. I doubt many non-fans will be won over though, whereas bands such as Foo Fighters, Muse and even Metallica are more likely to be welcomed by casual fans.

Hopefully T in the Park will get some really massive bands on the bill though, as prices keep rising so the punters deserve to get good headliners!

When they are on form they are brilliant and have had some good tunes but I do agree about Pete being unreliable. Such a shame because I think he is very talented

They have five songs which I think are great, plus members of the band have released other songs I liked outside of The Libertines. I know for a generation of people they were THE band, but I'd only be interested in hearing the five songs I really like of theirs.

Their first album is good, not great for me. The second album is pretty terrible.

At the time (I was 14 when their second album came out), I bloody loved them, and all the initial solo stuff, it was punk-influenced and anarchic, but lyrically was somewhat intelligent and very witty.

That said, however, I don't think they've aged particularly well at all, certainly not in comparison to other music of the time. I'm glad they're together again, but despite my Libs obsession ten years ago, I have no intention of ever seeing them.

I was a fan back then and there was alot of talk about them being geniuses and the most important band at the time. But sadly when the evidence wasn't there to prove it, it became harder to believe it.

I think they're fantastic, very talented and I love both albums. I think Pete and Carl are definitely better together. I really like Babyshambles and have liked all three of their albums along with Petes solo album but Carls non-Libertines stuff has been a bit hit and miss, although I'm looking forward to hearing his new album.

I think it's definitely a good thing them getting back together and I'll look forward to hearing new material.

I wouldn't bother seeing them at a big gig like that as I don't think they translate well to big outdoor gigs or arena sized venues but if they play Academy sized venues I'll be there in a shot. I've seen Babyshambles and Pete solo numerous times and they've always been enjoyable gigs. Some of the most enjoyable have been just Pete and an acoustic guitar where he just appears to be playing whatever comes into his head.

I hated them at first but don't mind them much now. They could've been a lot bigger but just lost their way. Definitely a product of their time when Indie was 'cool'. Don't think their early stuff stands up now.

I think they were brilliant and I still listen to both of their albums. I agree that Pete is unreliable and that they are average musicians, but you don't need to be the top notch musician/singer/guitarist to make really good tunes tbh. They are one of the most interesting bands of the past 15 years in my opinion.

And btw, I saw Foo Fighters live several times and I think they are the overrated band here, not The Libs who are very underrated (but it just may seem to me like that because Im not from UK).
