Seriously, can't stop listening to Rebel Heart. Her best album since Confessions, hands down. It is so strong - I LOVE LOVE LOVE Wash All Over Me, Messiah & Inside Out. So lyrically strong - just beautiful songs. The world needs to hear these songs.
Even the tracks that I didn't click with at first have started to grow on me. Some of these songs could have been lifted from 90s Madonna albums - it really is a return to form. I feel like I'm listening to Madonna at her peak again. It's a shame that the internet nastiness & ageism towards her could prevent this album from doing as well as it should but hey, it's their loss. Anyone who buys this album is in for a treat. |

Why do you think Ghosttown will fare worse than Living For Love?

Living For Love is not the strongest track on the album. The leaks haven't helped at all. I got the album on Friday & it's amazing - can't stop listening - but I kind of hate that I'd already heard half the tracks before I got it. I like to spend a bit of time getting to know each song but between the leaks & then releasing nine tracks prior to the album release, there were only a few new songs for me to hear for the first time.
LFL has been available since December. To do well in the singles chart, they count sales/downloads from the previous week, am I right? Not for the previous two months - which is when it first became available. That's not to say it was guaranteed top ten - we don't know that & we'll never know now. I hate that the leaks may have hurt this release overall because it's her best album since Confessions. Radio stations need to start playing her music as well. She may be 56 (and so what?) but her music has not aged - if this material was released by Rihanna or Taylor, it would get massive airplay. Having said all of that though, sadly it's not possible to stay on top for over 30 years. Things slow down for everybody. She'll always be the The Queen of Pop to me & she's the only artist I get super-excited about. She has tons of fans who feel the same way I do about her. She's a massive touring artist now - her albums provide her with new material for tours. If she gets a hit single out of it, that's a bonus. |

As I highlighted, this is about the single. The album won't flop but the single's success has been awful, and I'd be surprised if Ghosttown gets top 200 in the UK! She should have picked Rebel Heart as the 2nd single as it didn't leak until the album did.
Because it connects with casual buyers in a way like a Gay anthem L4L simply couldn't. GT is a cinematic ballad in the vein of Live to Tell or My Heart Will go On. I expect it to do much better than than L4L. And while first singles are usually the most successful, that isn't always the case. Mariahs first single flopped then she had 18 weeks at no 1 with We Belong Together. And in the US, Secret was a moderate hit, but it was followed up by a 7 week no 1 with Take a Bow. |

But Rebel Heart was the FIRST song to be leaked in it's entirety! Hence why she completely changed it! I think Ghosttown has a good chance. Why?

I think a good way for Madonna to have a hit single again is if some of her tracks were included on a soundtrack to a movie or something - because there are some absolutely amazing love songs on Rebel Heart that are so lyrically strong - Wash All Over Me, Inside Out & Messiah - my God, those songs are just so beautiful. But if radio won't play her songs, then there is no way that younger listeners will ever hear them. They're not going to seek her out - the songs need to make their way into their ears and the only way to do that is radio airplay or feature them in a movie/tv show/ad campaign.

But my dear, as we have said on this thread already, the market has moved on so much (even in 1 year). Fingers crossed but I don't think there is a way that even Ghosttown is going to catch the attention of the younger audiences and drive streams through spotify and older people already have the song thus they won't download it.
Guess we shall have to see. Time as always reveals all. But I'll make a few predictions. I think GT will be A listed by Radio 2..it "may" have a chance on R1...Doubtful, but it's a great track...Radio 1 might want to undo a bit of the ageist damage from L4L and here is an opportunity for them to say, see it isn't about age it's track specific. Secondly, there are a lot of causals out there who are simply unaware of the song. It's the casuals that will make this song either a success or failure. The fans already have it. It's not always about "younger audiences" . If people connect to a song they will buy it. If this song isn't a hit, then I will concede that Madonna's days of scoring "hits" are probably done and she will be an album and touring artist. Because I'm not sure what else she can do. As an interesting side note, there are a LOT of young people posting their covers of Ghosttown on Youtube.... |

Could it be because there aren't enough threads about her on DS?

This entire section is polluted by record companies/agents/music pluggers, so it's hardly surprising.

I think as singles go she is done until she dies sadly.
But album wise its too early to say Rebel Heart is a bigger flop than MDNA. Its already got better reviews from the critics so even if it does fall short at least it won't be called a disaster. Madonna has had many albums that have not met expectation. American Life is her best work but also one of her least selling. Does it take away from the album? not at all. |

I did listen to the leaked material, held off for as long as I could but eventually had to listen, can't believe some of the songs that have been left off the album. Revolution, Beautiful Scars, God is Love...

People grow up and stop buying singles (however you're meant to do that these days).
I love Madonna and have and always will have any album she releases, but her last single I bought was American Life, when I was 24. |

From what I've heard, it's just not that good.
It's impossible to say it's flopping. It only came out today. The single performed badly but then I think most realistic people expected it too. Charts have changed. She'll struggling to get another hit single again. But nobody can suggest the album has flopped. At least not yet. |

The album is not exactly setting the amazon best sellers chart alight at the moment. And given the fact it's only been released today you would expect it to be comfortably #1 by now.....

It's ridiculous isn't it. I thought about saying something myself but then you only get 'well you've just made another one' replies
What really pisses me off is when they hijack another tthread. The Rihanna one is full of 'she'll never be as good as Madonna' which really annoys me. I've stopped coming on here so much because of it |

The biggest mistake is not having Revolution on there! I can't believe it missed out but Madonna often leaves great tracks off albums. Across The Sky would have been a huge song had it been on Hard Candy and released as a single. Despite her business head Madonna can be short sighted at times.
Spanish Lesson was chosen in favour of Across The Sky in the end wasn't it? By the way, Happy Rebel Heart Day! My Autorip from Amazon was ready to go at midnight so I already have it on my laptop. Shame it's the clean version though! |

I can understand the "Rebel Heart" thread as it is released today, but perhaps a "Madonna General Discussion" thread should be implemented to replace the umpteen threads about her. The Discussion thread wouldn't be an appreciation thread, that already exists. |
