This is quite a nice little consolation for those disappointed at Madonna being number 2. Take a look at this:
If people wanna compare, let's look at: #2 Rebel Heart - Madonna (56 y.o. and more than 30 yrs career) #2 Kiss me once - Kylie #2 Beyoncé - Beyoncé #2 The truth about Love - Pink #2 Dolly Parton - Blue Smoke (aged 69) #2 Barbra Streisand - Partners (aged 69) #3 Celine Dion - Love Me Back to Life #9 Annie Lennox - Nostalgia #10 Cheek to Cheek - Lady Gaga #14 Me. I am Mariah - Mariah Carey #28 Lotus - Christina Aguilera #34 Britney Jean - Britney Spears #41 A.K.A - Jennifer Lopez That number 2 club is great isn't it!? # 6 It's The Girls -Bette Midler. I was thinking about this the other day and with some of the older artists, particularly Dolly Parton and Bette Midler they didn't have an extended period of promotion, but the quality of their exposure was what managed to get them to achieve their most successful album in the UK. Dolly had Glastonbury, and there were a couple of documentaries alongside that, but really it was 1 hour that got the British public eating out of her hand, lip-synching and all. SImilarly Bette Midler had a spot on royal variety, the One Show, played her Vegas show, she had her 'An Audience with Bette Midler' and she filmed a new documentary about her career and life, where she struggled to find where one of the places was. I think what really is key for Bette, Dolly and Madonna is that their personality and charisma is really magnetic and that is all the promotion that is needed. |

I wonder what their sales are.
Kylie: 29,251 Streisand: 21,000 approx Parton: Total album sales to date (first week sales not listed); 329,000 Beyonce: 33,929 first day (sold same amount the next day too!) Pink; 80,000 first week! Lennox: 18,222 Dion: 53,000 (Christmas market) These are some of the figures. Madonna's 38K doesn't actually look too bad does it? |

Another interesting point: Erotica in the US debuted at number 2 with sales of just 167,000 which isn't far off what Rebel Heart is likely to sell considering record sales are significantly less these days. In the UK it also debuted at number 2 with sales of 53,000.
Bedtime Stories debuted in the US at number 3 and sold just 145,000 units. In the UK it debuted at number 2 and sold around 36,000 units in its first week but lost steam thereafter. So in the UK, at a time where album sales are lower and just 9,000 can get a number 1 album, Rebel Heart is already more successful than Bedtime Stories so far! |

Does anyone know which tracks were produced by Natalia Kills? I know one was Holy Water which made it onto the album but what were the other ones?

That's the only one that made it. They recorded about 6 together..including one called Trust No Bitch..which you can find on Youtube. i wouldn't bother cos it's horrible. The whole X factor thing yesterday has really put me off Natalia Kills though and in a way Holy Water. Horrible bitch!

More "Rebel Heart" facts:
It has debuted at #1 in Germany and Netherlands today. It is also #1 in Czech Republic and Australia. So, it is officially a number 1 album. Madonna currently has 5 albums in iTunes UK top 100. With Rebel Heart, Madonna extended her lead as the biggest selling female artist of the 21st century in UK, with cumulative sales of 7,653,480 million copies. 7/10 UK households have at least one Madonna album. There you go, not quite a has-been just yet!

Live Nation/Interscope's Madonna looks set to rule the HITS Building Album Sales Chart this week, while Twentieth Century Fox/Columbia's Empire ST is due to claim the #1 position on the SPS (Sales Plus Streaming) Chart. What about Luke Bryan's newest Spring Break and chart mainstays like Taylor, Sam and Drake? Stay tuned.
The SPS chart is the official Billboard 200. Seems likes streaming is really negatively effecting veteran artists on the charts.

By the way, Rebel Heart was the #1 digital album in UK but #3 in physical and only #33 in streaming. So overall #2.

Ah! Thanks. Perhaps I need a better understanding of how America's charts work. They seem to have millions of them. Cheers for correcting me! I was getting quite excited for a minute.

The updated Billboard 200 will utilize accepted industry benchmarks for digital and streaming data, equating 10 digital track sales from an album to one equivalent album sale, and 1,500 song streams from an album to one equivalent album sale. All of the major on-demand audio subscription services are considered, including Spotify, Beats Music, Google Play and Xbox Music.

How does a "stream" get recorded and work? I find all this modern stuff confusing. My poor ageing head!

So you have to stream a song 1000 times to equate to one album sale?
![]() Quote:
In case you’re wondering how exactly it’s going to work, the Official Charts Company has said it will be using its own formula, which takes the 12 most streamed tracks from the standard version of the album, and down-weights the top two songs in line with the average of the rest, which should ensure a popular single doesn’t artificially inflate the popularity of an album. The total of these streams is divided by 1000 and added to the physical and digital sales of the album – the 1,000 ratio is apparently used to reflect the difference in value between a track stream and the price paid for an album.

Congrats to Madonna on her brilliant album, one of her best in years, imo. The sales may not be amazing compared to her work of the past but in today's world how could they ever be? What with all the leaks damaging her sales and considering the relentless bias against her from some quarters because of her age, with idiots saying she's past it and should retire I think she's done remarkably well with it so far. I'm sure, if she releases the right singles to promote it further she'll notch up a heck of a lot more sales over time. I think some of her best songs ever are on this album, she just needs the wide general public to hear them. Plus, as she has a generally older aged fan base these days she's better off not releasing bland, generic sounding songs with tiresome rent-a-rapper featured acts to try and get down 'wiv da kidz'. That is just cliched and embarrassing and too try hard for someone of Madonna's calibre. I do think that she alienated a lot of her fans when she started to sound generic and like a million other acts out there. I think Unapologetic Bitch, Heartbreak City, Illuminati, Ghosttown, Joan Of Arc, Inside Out, Wash All Over Me and Messiah are all stunning songs and any of them could be singles. I just hope she doesn't release Bitch I'm Madonna or SEX, two of Madonna's worst songs ever, imo, lol. Anyway, on the whole I think I can safely put Rebel Heart in my top 5 Madonna albums of all-time, I love it that much. My only one real complaint, a bit too much auto-tune on her voice in places. Especially on the first verse of Ghosttown, for example. Madonna doesn't need it and I'm sick of that synthesised, robotic, dehumanising sound it gives just about every other singer these days!
