Lead Singles which weren't the First Single
Got thinking about whether FourFiveSeconds by Rihanna is her Lead single off of R8 or simply the first single, with the lead coming later...
Sooo, I was thinking of some Lead Singles which weren't the first singles and wondered if anyone could think of any more ![]() Pokerface by Lady Gaga (over Just Dance) Anaconda by Nicki Minaj (over Pills n Potions) Up / All Fired Up / What About Us by The Saturdays (over ITIL / N / 30D) Summer by Calvin Harris (over Under Control) |

I think I know what you mean.
Justin Timberlake - Mirrors really overshadowed Suit n Tie after his Brits performance. Same with Someone Like You over Rolling In The Deep. |

I'm hoping that FourFiveSeconds is going to be eclipsed by the next Rihanna single. I'd be worried if it doesn't as it's quite an underwhelming first single imo.

Chris Brown - Kiss Kiss
Wall To Wall flopped as the lead single, so they released Kiss Kiss which was number 1 for three weeks. But i think Wall to Wall is largely forgotten as the lead single because of it's poor performance. |

You're Beautiful is surely the best example of this. 3rd single from Back To Bedlam and what happened next was unbelievable...

So basically any album where the second single did much better than the lead single?
In that case I would suggest. Gwen Stefani - The Sweet Escape (over Wind It Up) Britney Spears - Toxic (over Me Against The Music) Erasure - Love To Hate You (over Chorus) Erasure - Blue Savannah (over Drama!) Jason Donovan - Too Many Broken Hearts (over Nothing Can Divide Us) lolBeyonce - Irreplaceable (over Deja Vu) |

I would say the most obvious example of that would be Waterloo by Abba. Their first single was 'Ring Ring' and only got to no 32, but it was followed by Eurovision and the rest is history. |

Would Atomic Kitten's Whole Again count? Fifth single from their debut album released over a year after their debut single.

This is a stupid thread, you're basically asking for examples of when second singles did better than first singles. Pills N Potions flopped so it was brushes under the rug as a "promo single" - guaranteed it would have been called the lead single off TPP if it had done well initially.
Just Dance was the lead single, where has she ever said it wasn't? Summer/Under Control as well - who said that UC wasn't the "lead single"? |
