Hopkins, davidson, busey , wood what is it about these unplesant characters that made them popular as compared to the so called baddies of the past.
Was there are defining moment that changed it forever. Trying to think of what davidson did and where this new breed of voter appeared from. |

I'm guessing it's the new generation of viewers. It began with Davidson and has cursed us since.

Gary Busey was lovely. I didn't see any bad in him at all.

I think it was probably the year that Thatcher's children were old enough to buy their own phones

I wouldn't put Gary in that category myself. Quote:

Unless you mean specifically the unpleasant characters winning (which of course, they thankfully didn't). |

My issue is that I was always a supporter of the so called just below the surface baddie who wasnt that much of a baddie that was generally hated by the voters.
However we have gone a lot more right of centre now from that so called level of badness I don't generally like what we have as faves now either one extreme to the other |

The support goes back as far as Maxwell and Saskia in BB6, Grace and Nikki in BB7, Charley in BB8, but yes for the nasties to actually WIN Big Brother these days is a poor reflection of how society is going/
In earlier series Keith would be the hero for staying decent and good humoured but now he is fake and dull. I despair to be honest that anyone can find Katie Hopkins either amusing or likeable. |

Why isn't there up roar about bullying, like when that Shilpa Shetti year happened? Jade and the other girls got death threats after that. Nowadays people like Helen Wood gets a pat on the back and wins money out of her nastiness. Now it seems People are loving Hopkins. It just doesn't make sense to me.

You might have a point OP if all of these series were out-and-out good v evil scenarios, but you forget that alongside Hopkins, Davidson and Busey were Perez, Nolan and Jordan. It's not as straightforward as you are making it. |

I'd argue it was the backlash following Sam winning BB14. Production loved Dexter and Gina and spent a lot of time and effort promoting them and I feel that production and a lot of the fanbase were annoyed at someone say painfully irrelevant winning the show instead. So since then production have gone out of their way to make sure that their bigger characters, regardless of their behaviour, win come the finale.

I think there was a sea change in BB14, when villains like Gina and a contrived gameplayer like Dexter were embraced by the public.
And not by coincidence, BB14 was the year that the producers REALLY started playing dirty...no series before it had so much interference in terms of replaying private conversations and revealing public opinions... task after task was designed around public polls or to create an argument between HMs...viewers were allowed to vote to punish particular HMs with particularly humiliating tasks...and no conversation - diary room or not - was considered sacrosanct. So I'm wondering if the slide into a truly nasty BB by the producers has had a pernicious influence on how we regard HMs and ergo who wins? Attitudes being contagious and all that. |

Not really, there are plenty of us who despise her. I've been teetering on the edge of giving up on BB altogether because of the elevation of the 'tell it like it is' brigade, it's just no fun when the whole point of the exercise is to watch televised bullying.

Nasty Nick was the first baddie of BB - wow how tame was what he did now and he got abused in the street at the time
![]() The HMs would get the hot water switched off for a couple of hours and that would be the end of it. |
