Katy Perry Superbowl
What's everyone s thoughts on it?
Started spectacularly with an amazing set design, but has since gone flat in my opinion. Enjoyed Lenny Kravitz's cameo but I think the candy-pop of Teenage Dream and California Girls is starting to sound dated (doesn't help its freezing here in England so not in the mood for summer songs!) the Missy Elliot cameo seemed unnecessary. Firework could save it here though, if ever a song was meant for a Super Bowl halftime show... |

I think 'Firework' was up to the standard of the game which has been great so far!

I kinda liked it. It was trippy and strange and that was before Missy's mime section (and I LOVE Missy Elliot).
The staging was great though. And she looked hot. Sound, I wish she'd mimed but that's a constant for me and KP performances. |

Was enjoying it then Missy came on and I was thinking they were gonna do a remix of a KP song then Missy went on and on and then KP just came back for Firework and I felt let down

Do they pre-record a vocal to mime to that sounds like it is live? Or does she always sound that bad?

I don't think Katy Perry has ever been known for her vocal ability
.I love the lion entrance but yeah, it kind of went downhill from there. It wasn't bad or boring though. The dancing beach balls, trees & sharks were cute. |

I agree with the op about the performance, maybe a second song with Lenny, American Woman, had been a better option. |

Lol, I don't even think the vocals were pre.recorded, it was the studio tape of her vocals.

It was definitely not the studio tape. So many differences.

Or ar least mixed with live, pre and tape, chorus of Roar and Firework etc,. the vocal sound was significant better than Madonna, where everything was pre recorded, just my opinion,

But we’ll never forget that Katy Perry took an opportunity to show the world that music is made up of brain dead mercenaries who can’t say no.
Once upon a time, music was the antidote. The response to the status quo. Now it is the status quo. How very sad. |

It started off well, the staging was excellent and then if went downhill dramatically with the cheap and tacky Teenage Dream/California Gurls segment. How predictable to end with Firework accompanied by.....firework!

Jeez it's a 12 minute slot and I think she did really well. Digital Spy forum appears nowadays just to be full of bitter trolls. Yes there would have been a backing studio version playing with her live vocals on top. This isn't miming but the way modern pop acts perform Beyoncé included. You could tell she was singing by the vocal changes throughout some of the tracks. No she doesn't have the best vocal ability in the world but she doesn't have to she is a pop artist. So I was predictable name one artist that's done the Super Bowl that wasn't predictable you have 12 minutes to highlight your music career and you have to appeal to a stadium of people there for the game, so of course all artists pick what they think are there most popular songs. It would be career suicide to do anything else.
Yes her early material will sound dated because it is that's a fact. I think she did really well and most probably one of her best vocal performances live I have heard. |

I enjoyed it, I appreciated the pre-recorded vocals, she definitely wasn't singing live, but that's ok, neither did Madonna and Beyonce's was mostly lip-synched as well.
I enjoyed the staging and the fun performances, it was nothing iconic or spectacular but she did what she said she was setting out to do - put on a fun, lively show. The only part that seemed unnecessary was Missy's part, I thought she would just feature in one of the tracks, not stand there and waste a good 3-4 minutes of Katy's set, she could have used that time to slot in E.T or TGIF or another hit. |

I didn't like it at all. I agree that the production was huge, however it all looked so cheap. That big lion she came riding in on at the start looked so tacky and cheap, and their efforts to hide the men near its legs pulling all the strings/wires to make it move failed. Then there was the Teenage Dream/Califronia Girls segment which looked even cheaper with all those palm trees etc. I know that obviously some of her songs are very cheesey/bubblegum pop so the whole point would be to make the staging for those songs a bit tacky on purpose...but she could have done it better than that. The Lenny Kravitz bit was ok, but the Missy Elliot bit was so boring and a bit pointless in my opinion. Like someone else said, the ending with Firework was just so predictable. Overall, it wasn't one of the better Superbowl performances...not much imagination or thought put into what they could have done.

She did amazing in the time she had. I am not entering in to was she live debate . I know the answer to that. The show summed up what Katy is all about. FUN.ENERGRY.COLOUR AND FEEL GOOD FACTOR. Well done Katy I am very proud of you and even had a tear in my eye as she performed firework. |

I thought she did a very good job. Missy Elliot was an unfortunate 'mood-killer' for the men watching though.
