Press release:

DIXONS CARPHONE CONFIRMS MVNO WITH THREE

Dixons Carphone confirms an exciting new MVNO partnership with Three. The new network, which builds on the group’s existing mobile broadband relationship with Three, is due to launch in Spring and will bring innovative and highly personalised connectivity options for customers to enjoy.

Graham Stapleton, CEO of Carphone Warehouse UK & Ireland says: “The announcement of our new network supports our strategic vision to continue to offer customers the widest range of connections, for when they are at home or on-the-go.”

Lynda Burton, Director of Wholesale at Three, said: “This is our biggest new customer to date and a great opportunity to be the MVNO partner of a large scale brand with real mobile expertise and insight. Our network capability, recognised as best for smartphone customer satisfaction and reliability, is a great platform and we look forward to supporting the UK’s biggest mobile specialist’s MVNO success.”

Interesting- I wonder if this will be marketed as "budget" like GiffGaff is to O2.

As they buy wholesale services from O2 and resell to customers they are an MVNO.

But I think Currys/PC World were doing Three mobile broadband products and possibly selling PAYG SIMs?

Carphone had stopped doing contracts and even selling prepay SIM cards some time ago though.

Its a wholy owned O2 brand is it not

Even as far as financial reporting is made within the headline O2 numbers i thought

That's not an mvno, its simply a company selling its product through two brands.

Well that will be a naff network if it's got the network coverage of 3. They still have shocking coverage indoors and outdoor is still patchy in many places.

I wouldn't say outdoor was to bad anymore few places where you still switch to roaming. Indoor though you right is still one there main flaws which might soon start to go as they rollout out 800MHz. Maybe Dixons Carphone are betting on 800MHz rollout plans or Three offered them the best wholesale price.

Giffgaff Ltd is a subsidiary company of Telefonica Uk Ltd not just a "trading as" brand name like "O2" in the UK. My understanding is it operates as an MVNO.

"And so the idea of giffgaff was conceived: a mobile virtual network operator
(MVNO) which would run on the O2 network and be owned by O2, but which would operate as a separate business and target a group of consumers for whom
the O2 brand had little appeal."

With the threat of the networks pulling out and doing a 4u on them they have to hang on somehow.

Giffgaff being owned by O2 doesn't stop it being an MVNO.

Does BT Wholesale and BT Retail being the same company (BT Group) stop BT broadband being broadband?
