I've done this once but now can't keep getting an error message, anyone know if Apple have stopped it?

Needs an iPhone linked to the same Apple ID as the iPad as the iPad actually uses the iPhone to send the SMS.

If the iPhone isn't close enough to talk to it via WiFi and bluetooth that could be why you're getting the error.
