Female Crooners
Basically female singers who sing in a low, kind of sensual voice... The main examples can think of are Shirley Manson, Tracy Thorn and Sharleen Spiteri. I love that type of singing though. Can you think of anymore examples?

I think the term 'crooner' applies only to male artists. But an example of a female singer I can think of is Peggy Lee.

There's no end of "female crooners," if that's what you want to call them. But they were enduring having long careers and for many of them, their albums sell despite the fact that they may be long since dead.
Many were ex- "big band singers" who learned their craft over years, before going solo and becoming household names. As opposed to older female pop singers who get into ballads, once their main audience find someone younger. Susannah McCorkle, (not a band singer) a favourite of mine, will be unknown to many, but had a long career (before sadly committing suicide). She was reputed to have a repertoire of over 3,000 songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OmN3A3lmrA I've linked a lot of similar singers on this forum. |

the term 'crooner' isn't often applied to female singers but I can't really think what the equivalent would be ?
'Chanteuse' sounds a bit pretentious........ Anyway, surely the Queen of whatever they're called is Ella Fitzgerald ? Does 'crooner' have any negative connotations ?.......like, 'oh, he's only a crooner, singing soppy songs for young girls to swoon over? But then your archetypal crooners would probably be Crosby and Sinatra and both of them have legendary status |
