I know--he could've just said 'Of course I was playing A Character in there--but it was harder than I thought--as no one could be as awful as I pretended to be. I do have an Acting degree!' etc. But he confused cause and effect in his defensiveness: I behaved badly because everyone hated me rather than everybody hated me because I behaved badly.
