Vodafone ask Three to work with them and dump EE/BT
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...o-curb-BT.html
Any thoughts on this. Did not realise MBNL was 3G sharing only, i believe the Vodafone and O2 sharing covers all 2G/3G/4G. Would suspect this makes it much easier to cut the MBNL tie up and run with Vodafone going forward. |

Not sure if I want the Vodafone standard of mediocrity infecting 3. That said, they're both as bad as each other on 4G.

Does all sound like quite a mess.
I would imagine that some of these arrangements might have to be revised after the deals to buy/merge are done. |

What I'll say out loud though is the following; is anyone surprised Vodafone have said this? A cynical person could say this is a 'corporate version' (for want of a better description) of "don't you dare leave us on our own, we'll fight you all the way if you do". Quote:

I hope (like moox) that Vodafone's mediocrity doesn't infect Three though - here, Vodafone's 'effort' is a shambles which (to date) they're pretending not to acknowledge. |

MBNL is way ahead of Cornerstone by a very wide margin. Project Spring would be better called Project Winter. No point what so ever for ditching MBNL unless you want to go backwards. Vodafone are worried about being left in the lurch. They can perhaps think about all the money they saved by having a dead slow 3G roll out which they may well pay a high price for if Cornerstone gets ditched. Its hard to find any sympathy for them.
It could of course make everyone join up for a single network roll out project but im probably dreaming! |

Vodafone are acting like the person without a partner for the last dance at the disco... Unless they own alot of the backhaul parts of the operation I couldn't see why three would need Vodafone..
Unless... One long term way forward could be this, three is a total smart phone business, with a device churn of 2 years , more people will have 4g phones in a few years, in the meantime three could switch it's focus from a high frequency 3g,4g network over to a predominantly low frequency 4g network with 1800 in city's and 2g backup and sell there share of the MBNL deal to bt, this would leave them with a token 3g network from O2 for legacy users.. Just not sure what they would do with all that 2100 spectrum.. |

I can see why Vodafone are scared of being left behind with their poor 3G/4G network, but the state of that network is no one's fault but their own.

Yes and when you consider what it would have cost them to get 3G to 98%, what the hell have they done with all that money?
Oh and the tax avoidance cash... Oh and the cash they should have spent upgrading their outdated 2G network.. They must be loaded!!

So he mentions that O2 have contractual obligations with them, and the same is in place for 3 and MBNL. Nobody will publicly state what the escape clauses out of these sharing deals are, but it's entirley plausible that they are pretty punitive to protect the operator left behind. It may simply come down to which one is easiest to get out of!
What is true is that 3 networks into 2 sharing agreements does not go long term. |

All depends on where to and what freq band in the county of monmouthshire in wales 02 have the best 2g its borough wide i have tested it and all other networks in monmouthshire and thanks to 02's 900mhz 2g coverage is good, 02s 900mhz 3g is not to bad and travels far thanks to 900mhz 3g, The most important thing to me is to be able to make a call in case of an emergency and also text data then comes next In monmouthshire 1.02 2. vodafone 3.ee 4 3 Quote:

I think the two infrastructure sharing arrangements, and the competition and regulatory concerns regarding them, are one of the absolutely key issues in terms of any prospective O2 and Three merger.
Leaving aside the not insignificant issue of whether it'd even be practical to switch O2's user base over to being serviced by MBNL masts any time in the remotely near future - and forgetting the question of how 2G would work along with a great many other questions - then I find it difficult to see how the competition authorities would look favourably on one infrastructure share supporting the majority of mobile users (whether through RAN sharing or less integrated mast sharing), with only one standalone alternative in the form of Vodafone. I'm tempted to think the easiest way forward for Hutchison would just be to sell Three UK, though this rather goes against all the 'future of European mobile industry is in consolidation' talk that has come from Hutch people of late. How's about Three UK being taken over by KCOM (nee Hull Telephone Department), though perhaps with KCOM having first been taken over by a Qatari investment fund...
