On the vodafone coverage checker as some might know it gives 4g coverage planned for the next three months and it looks a very good start for south wales,

Also alot of 02/voda 4g sites have gone live over the last week in cardiff and newport there is also a site on maplas road Newport by the BP garage that covers alot of Cwmbran well that went live on monday, Chepstow and Monmouth town will go live with 4g very soon,

Also not on the voda map is alot of planned sites for the county's of monmouthshire and torfaen both 02/voda sites,

And have noticed they are catching up in the west country with alot of plan sites in cornwall and devon,

To me I tink by the end of this summer voda/02 4g will overtake EE in these places

This is the result of BT/CW/VM & other Fibre suppliers investing in Wales recently and was the largest issue about getting 4G & Fast 3G into Wales. I doubt EE will be overtaken anytime soon as many a site is already upgraded awaiting backhaul, this was holding up all networks.,, well maybe not Three

Where are you seeing the Westcountry planned sites?
Their checker doesn't show them does it?

One thing i have notice in wales is where a area gets openreach fttc upgrades not long after the area will get some 4g from a network if the site is not far from the bt network

Not far from me is a former T-mobile site now EE 2g/3g/4g via microwave backhaul and has Three on site as well back in October the site had a visit and a 3 Samsung cab installed next to the EE Huawei cab and but a set of brand new panel antennas are still sitting on the floor of the compound waiting to be installed these panel have ports for 800mhz 1800mhz and 2100mhz,

I also seen another site joint ee/3 site the other day which has Virgin media network not far from it have a fibre from vm installed to it and BT backhaul removed,

In Malpas Newport last friday the came and had taken a whole mast down and installed a whole new mast new antennas and a huawei cab within a few hours and on Monday morning 9am it was live with 4g the same week there did 5 other sites in Newport all joint 02/voda sites all new live with 4g the same week they also did 7 sites in Cardiff all now live with 4g just days after the upgrades,

They came with teams of people not just one or two network engineers 20-30 people not including people driving the trucks and huge mobile cranes they are not hang about

So far they have done sites in Cardiff Newport Swansea Bridgend Caerphilly Chepstow Magor and the odd site inbetween and more planned for Monmouthshire Torfaen,

Nobody knows the future, but if EE stood still, Voda would not catch up in the SW and Wales, IMHO.

I have set myself a reminder to find this thread in 6 months, when we will all know how accurate the statement is.

I can't see ANY planned improvements for 3 or 4G in the south west on the coverage map. They did have a lot of the South Hams planned for 3G but now that has vanished. It's a joke and anyone waiting on them wants their head examined as they have been promising improvements down here for years. O2 have rolled out a bit of 3G900 which is only fit for checking your bank account (sometimes). You often get full signal and zero data. Only reason I switched to O2 (PAYG) is because 900 works in the pit where I live and 1800 struggles. But data is pointless pretty much everywhere. I was with 3 and while they have a good offering, when the 1800 fallback started going, it was useless too.

EE is a good compromise but you will miss calls in a lot of places where O2/VOD will get service. The only reason I don't sign up with them again is that I like getting texts in my cave without the need for extra hardware / expense.

I suspect that if EE get on with 800 / wifi calling and VoLTE then they will have this whole region sewn up for a good while.

Pasties.

Same here only get around 3mb on 3G900 but now get 4g outdoors 3 bars and 1 bar 02 4g indoors on 4g 800mhz, Inside with one bar get around 30mb and the base station is around 18 miles away but have line of site, Apart from the one i am picking up 4g from miles away the rest of the 02 and voda sites around here are outdated ,

Doing some work on a site in monmouthshire this afternoon a rural site and gprs is so slow on it you might aswell send a telegram

I also use 900mhz as it works where there is no ee 1800mhz or no three 2100mhz coverage,

How do you find vodafone down there 2g edge?,

There is no plans on the coverage checker but i know that planning apps went in all the local councils last year for the whole of cornwall and devon and none have been rejected some sites do not need planing apps as they come as upgrades to existing sites its only when a cab is added to site that is not in a compound e.g roadside monopole and extra huawei cab, Also allot of work was to be done asap on sites covering the main tourist bits of Cornwall asap before the summer holidays

I'm a south westerner.

It looks like EE are going to dominate in terms of 4G coverage (in about a month they've gone from practically no coverage in Cornwall to a hefty chunk), and if 3 can be bothered they won't be too far behind (EE will have already sorted out backhaul).

Given how it took years for Vodafone to do 3G where I am (and the performance is woeful) I'm not going to hold my breath.

This is an interesting thread. I believe both Devon and Cornwall will have some 4G #vodafone #o2 before the Summer Holidays. And Wales will continue to rollout at lightening speed. I'm seeing plans for many mip schemes getting pp too and some Arqiva towers will be 4G'd up as the agreement is now in place

Just picked up an O2 4G signal in the BS4 4** area. 2 bars inside.

Arqiva/MIP towers will also be EE so won't help them catch up at all.

EE 4G already in Devon & Cornwall now, since last year, with most of the large cities and towns covered. I find it eye opening that with O2/Voda that there is no 4G in Devon/Cornwall at all.. Nothing in fact left of Bristol/Weymouth at all.

I bet EE will be the first operator to have 4G at Lands End & John O'Grotes

That is very true haha it was meant to be on the later stages by now and it is still in the beginning stages.

Out of curiosity do you know if are EE planning on using 1800MHz or 800MHz on MIP masts or is it down to particular mast?
