my friend has one of these phones has gmail but can't get notifications to come through even though this is switched on along with auto sync on can you advise please?

Strange. If he can't resolve, suggest downloading the Aquamail app from the Play Store. Status bar notifications are available through this, also.

Have you checked all settings within the gmail app itself is everything set correctly.
