7 year old Humax LGB-19DTT LCD now has a problem when switching on. Picture fine but no sound then after about 10 minutes lots of crackling and popping then the sound gradually appears. Sound can be heard through headphones no problem during the "silent start up phase". Sometimes the picture will go and the sound kicks in instantly but most of the time it is as I first described. Once the sound kicks in it works fine.

I just wondered if the TV is on the way out or if a repair would be worthwhile. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

From the description it seems the amplifiers driving the speakers could be knackered. Or the power supply feeding the amplifiers. Depends if the power supply has a separate section just for the amplifier stage or not. If it doesn't then I would expect a power supply fault to affect other things as well.

A common issue is dodgy electrolytic capacitors in the circuit somewhere. They can degrade over time and cause all sorts of problems. If you know one end of a soldering iron from the other and know what to look for it is a possible DIY job to fix.

Less easy perhaps is if it's an IC or transistor or two in the amplifier stage. You can get a 10W or so power amplifier on a chip so that could have gone. Hard to be certain without actually looking inside the beast.

It might be possible to repair. If you fancy a bit of DIY the components are fairly cheap if you can track down what is faulty and a replacement can be found (easy enough for capacitors but might not be the case for an IC amp stage). If you farm it out to a repair shop then you have to consider whether the cost involved is justifiable in terms of how much the TV is worth and how much a like for like replacement would cost.

Thanks for the reply chrisjr. I'm afraid it would have to go to a repair shop as my DIY skills won't stretch to TV's. I think perhaps we will be looking at getting another set.

Thanks again.
