Can anyone please confirm whether this particular tv contains an analogue tuner as I am thinking of purchasing this set to replace an older and much more power hungry plasma tv that is seven years old and giving problems. As I tend to pipe output from my satellite receivers around the house using coax cable at RF level you can see that an analogue tuner is still important in my case. Unfortunately most sales assistants working in such places as Currys do not seem to have this kind of information and cannot understand the reason why some customers still find the need to require an analogue tuner since off air broadcasts in analogue were discontinued nearly three years ago. Unfortunately whilst many tvs still have analogue tuners it is not mentioned in the specifications on the various product web sites. I am aware of course that if there is no analogue tuner that one could possibly use an old vcr and connect that at AV level. Also whilst on the subject of purchasing new tvs, does anyone know why it is that sets on display in places such as Currys or Argos never display off air tv channels only a promotion loop which never does most sets justice.

Bit of a pain reading the OP with no paragraphs and hardly any commas but no the TV doesn't have an analogue tuner. I suggest in future you visit Richer Sound for your demos. Phone beforehand and arrange a visit when it's quiet for them, there's no obligation to buy.

You could try your local John Lewis and you may have more luck than I did, but the Liverpool store weren't even remotely interested in giving me a proper demo. They were a lot more customer-centric when they were in their original G.H.Lee premises before the move to Liverpool One.

Or maybe I have an old-fashioned view about what customer service actually means, and that view doesn't fit the current John Lewis model.

All the specifications I have seen for this series of TVs suggest it does have an analogue tuner. It should in any case be fairly easy to confirm because the tuning section of the menu ought to offer both analogue and digital modes if it does have an analogue tuning stage.

It's almost entirely unknown for sets NOT to contain an analogue 'tuner', apart from some tiny portables and a cheap crap set that Argos had specially made there aren't many others.

Oh well, in light of what Chris and Nigel have said I must have got it wrong. I downloaded and looked at the very long manual and checked the Which review (it's a Best Buy), and searched on Google and I must have missed what Chris found, and what Nigel already knows due to his long experience and expertise in TVs.

I forgot to say in my first post too, that places like Currys and especially Argos, aren't interested in giving you proper demos, just to show you what the TVs look like, probably in shop display mode and hope you'll buy on the spot, and preferably on the drip so they can make money on the loan deal and please their managers.

The E-Manuals on the Samsung website are a waste of time and effort downloading frankly. They tell you sweet FA about any specific model and seem to be so generic as to be more or less useless.

There are no specs on the Samsung website either as it seems this may be an obsolete model. But if you google the model number or just the H5500 part it throws up various websites that do show the specs. Unless they are all wrong, an analogue tuner appears to be mentioned by all the one's I found.

Okay, no need to rub it in. I feel bad enough already that I got it wrong!

I have the 32" version of the H5500 in the bedroom and can confirm that it does have an analogue tuner. (Never saw a 50" listed anywhere before - thought that 48" was the biggest in this model).

Thanks Nigel, your knowledge and expertise is always much appreciated and highly regarded on these platforms. I must say that I would be very surprised if this set did not have an analogue tuner. The trouble is getting hold of information in these big chain stores. I did notice in my local branch of Currys that all the sets were only connected with an HDMI cable putting out this promotional loop in SD. No sets were connected using the aerial socket, so obviously no demonstration of off air broadcasts could be given even if any of the shop assistants were feeling helpful, also there were no handsets to be seen.

You are absolutely right and spot on. I did try this myself although I am not so sure this is an obsolete model.

It doesn't appear to be in their current catalogue as far as I can work out. There do appear to be 48. 40 and 32 in versions of the H5500 series but no 50in listed on their website.

Assuming though that the 48in uses basically the same electronics as the 50 then according to the specs it does have an analogue tuner

The thing is it's not something which is really ever mentioned very much, because there's no need to - if you go to buy a car does it ever specifically say that it's got wheels?.

But if you're buying a TV, then ask - if they confirm it has, and it then turns out it hasn't, (unlikely as they would be) then you have a solid case for your money back.

I've noticed that the boxes these days don't mention analogue (or digital) tuning.
Do they still include nicam and teletext or have these now been dropped?

Just to give an update. I took delivery of this set the other day and confirm unlike the manufacturer, the retailer and the manual that this set definitely 100 per cent has an an analogue tuner which only proves at the end of the day that you are better off asking the man in the street.
