I've just bought an HD box with built in recorder..( GI Avatar 2 Linux HD). I've connected the box to the TV with both an HDMI and scart lead.
I am wanting to record a program which I am currently watching ( I know I need another lead from the dish to record a program on another channel not being watched but haven't got round to it yet).
When I press the record button on the remote, I get a message 'No usb device connected or device has been stopped'.
Can anybody help please. I'm sure it's something simple that I'm doing wrong ...or not doing.

Cheers

As far as I can see that box is a RECEIVER - not a recorder.

To record on it you probably need to supply an external USB HDD, which is why it's complaining you haven't got one.

Personal recordings look to be done via USB, you do have a USB device connected, don't you?

It was sold to me as being able to record. It has twin aerial IN points and tells me how to record in the handbook. It's just the connections it doesn't make clear.

It is record capable. It just needs an external hard drive. Though having downloaded the manual I can see why you might have missed that very important fact. it doesn't exactly leap out at you that there is no hard drive inside the box and you must use an external drive. In fact I couldn't see anywhere where it explicitly says all recordings are made to a USB drive.

Looking at the specs, it has no storage, just USB ports to add your own.

It's also a discontinued model in case you didn't know and want to send to back.

Also, if your TV is an HD TV, then just connect with an HDMI lead.
There's no point in having the scart connected as well, in fact it might confuse things.

Please excuse my ignorance but doesn't the fact that it has twin tuners allow it to record?

Ok i'll remove the scart..........I read somewhere on the net that I needed to connect both leads to be able to record.

The number of tuners is nothing at all to do with recording. You can record with a single tuner. Though it is more common to have twin tuners in a recorder so that you can record and watch two different channels.

But has as been repeatedly posted the box IS a recorder. It just lacks any internal storage and relies on external USB drives

I have a Seagate slim 500 gb. Will that be suitable for an external hard drive?

The ONLY purpose of the connection to the telly is to allow you to set up the recording. Once that is done you can unplug every connection to the box bar mains and dish lead(s).

The TV plays no part in the recording itself and does not need to even exist for the box to sit there happily recording away. Mind you not having a telly does make it a bit difficult to choose what you want to record and watch it back afterwards

Should be OK. If it is only USB powered the only issue may be how much power it draws from the USB port. Also make sure there is no data on the drive that you cannot afford to lose. The box may format the drive before it can use it wiping everything on it.
