So Im after a cheap digital hd box for a bedroom tv, I say cheap because it won't be used very often, 90/95% of tv viewing will be done on the downstairs main tv.

So the only MUST have things are it wants to be HD so we can get 1-4 in HD at least, anything else is a bonus! And also the programme guide and onscreen menus need to be have decent, I know some cheap digi boxes have slow and laggy menus, I don't want any of that, heck is rather pay abit more if it's not possible to have a good menu system on a cheaper unit.

IVe seen a "Manhattan freesat HD" box in Currys for £44, is that ok? That's the kinda price I was thinking. It does the job on paper but I don't know how it is in terms of the programme guides etc. don't want to end up throwing something across the room!

The first thing to sort out is whether you want Freesat or Freeview. Do you have a satellite dish with a feed into the bedroom? In which case you could use Freesat. If you only have a roof aerial fed into the bedroom then the only option is Freeview.

Of course if you have both satellite and aerial feeds available then you can have either or both.

I think freeview HD is cheaper than freesat HD

Made a mistake, I forgot that I'd need a dish for freesat! We've just got an aerial so freeview box it is!

If you have an internet connection nearby, buy a nearly new Talk Talk Youview box.
With the internet connection you will have on demand as well.
I paid £35 for the one I'm using at the moment.
Make sure you get the model with the hard drive for recording TV channels
Ebay or Gumtree will supply.
Please note that if no internet connection is available, the Youview box will still work as a freeview
receiver, but with no on demand
