2Cellos is a Croatian cello duo, consisting of classically trained Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser. Signed to Sony Masterworks since 2011, they released two albums and play mainly instrumental covers of well-known pop and rock songs. Apparently, they get a standing ovation after every piece they play! (Rather easy on the eye too!)

I personally love the contrast between "Shape of my heart" and "Live and Let Die!"

I'm glad someone mentioned them here, they are from my country, Luka is actually from city I live, Dubrovnik. I'm so glad they got worldwide recognition. They recently released the 3rd album Celloverse, those songs you mentioned are from that album

Elton John is their massive fan, it is because of him that they gained worldwide attention, he called Luka at the music academy where he was studying after he saw their first music video Smooth Criminal . Also, Japan declared January 20th as 2Cellos day, they are huge there.

Ah thank you - I can't believe I haven't heard of them until now and I'm definitely going to get the album. Their rendition of Smooth Criminal is extraordinary (and energetic! ) I gather they are already taking some countries by storm and think they are going to do really well here too. I've just been listening to Elton John talk about them and he thinks they are the most gifted young talent he has seen in years.

I especially love their rendition of I Will Wait followed by beautiful music video shot in Croatian national park Plitvicka jezera (jezera means lakes)

I saw these on the BBC One show the other evening and they were on BBC Breakfast this morning. Two guys playing Pop and Rock covers on Cello's, being touted as the next big thing.... I wouldn't mind but I'm struggling to see anything new about them at all.

Apocalyptica

Apocalyptica was formed in 1993 when four cellists, Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen gathered to play Metallica covers at Sibelius Academy.
Sound like a familiar concept? Apocalyptia have released eight albums since 1996, a ninth is due to be released this year, and they have sold over 4 million albums....

Granted they aren't new but they are probably one of the few people out there who managed to create a great career out of that. They simply filmed Smooth Criminal video and the whole thing exploded. Not everything has to be new, it is just that they got extremely lucky that Elton John pushed them and opened the doors for them. Though, no one can't deny they are very talented and it should be noted that they haven't ignored the classical music they studied so many years. They actually have one track Benedictus on In2ition album, here is a beautiful live performance:

It is just of course, money comes from commercial mainstream things.

By the way, here is them fooling around with just 1 cello playing Coldplay's Every Tear Is A Waterfall

It's nothing new. Finnish band Apocalyptica have been doing it for about 15 years.

But who is saying that about them, that they are a new thing? If they are truly perceived like that, that is definitely wrong. I kind of got a vibe that the media is hyping it all because they their success came all of a sudden thanks to a Youtuble clip, plus I'm sure they are also fascinated that they are from a little country Croatia.

Actually I was incorrect. apparently Apocalyptica formed in 1993. So yeah, 2 Cellos is absolutely nothing new. The difference is the hype.
