Nil points to me then.

Most British rock 'n' roll records of the fifties were very poor imitations of the American original, but the following three were not - they're quite excellent.

Cliff from 1958:-

Cliff Richard - Move It
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyHXaVWRKvQ

Famously covered by the Clash, but this version from 1959 is better:-

Vince Taylor - Brand New Cadillac
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2j7...=RDW2j7sLUDkDM

A classic from 1960 (okay, not the fifties but near enough):-

Johnny Kidd and the Pirates - Shaking All Over

Each to their own.

I never had any time for Cliff Richard.
In my late teens, my future wife and I were walking down Old Compton Street one evening. It was around 9.00pm and we were on our way to the launderette, we had a flat in Soho and never went out to clubs etc., that early in the evening.
As we passed the 2iis coffee bar (a place we never would be seen dead in), someone we knew was coming out. He told us he'd come out as they had a rubbish singer in there that week, but it'd be better next week as they were getting Joe Brown. He was of course talking about Cliff Richard.

So I wasn't on my own.

After the (moderate) success of "Move It" Cliff soon changed his style to something that had much broader appeal, albeit something that is now considered naff by many. However, I do think "Move It" is a very rare example of good 1950's British rock 'n' roll.

Joe Brown's career never took off until the early sixties.

This is true, but he was well liked by "we locals."

I had quite a broad taste in music even at that age, pop, Motown and modern jazz, my future wife and I joined Ronny Scott's first club when it opened. I saw an advert for it in the Melody Maker and it cost us 7/6d each to join and it was free mid-week. Now it'd cost you about three hundred quid to become a member.

7/6d is the equivalent of 37.5p, so a fair bit of inflation over the last 55-plus years then!

Blimey, I didn't think anyone would post on this thread - so glad you did and you are!

I never particularly liked this kind of music and it was well before my time - but now I'm

older I like to hear it (I also like Sinatra now).

I was really amazed to see some of the audiences in my first post sitting down - I

would have had to be up and dancing!

Frankie Lyman and the Teenagers were a sort of fifties version of the Jackson Five, only 100 times better (imo).

I like Dion and the Belmonts, the best white doo-wop group by a mile.

As we're celebrating this style of music in this thread almost sixty years after it was made that Danny and the Juniors track turned out to have quite a prophetic title.

That reminds me of Wade Walker..........Johnny Depps character in Cry Baby. If you haven't seem it the film is a marvellous affectionate homage to the 1950s with wonderful 50s style music......here's a few samples.....

King Cry Baby........https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6YakT1zZ0o

Please Mr Jailer.......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtpkqslTudg
