I think JohnnyForget already posted this by Big Joe Turner - think it's my favourite version of Shake Rattle and Roll

Bill Haley's is good too - just different

I like Bobby Darrin, this is a favourite of mine, though not rock & Roll. He wasn't well when he sung this you can tell. Breathing problems before he started.

I think all this rock n roll is preying on my mind - have actually ordered a book about Buddy Holly too - well today:

making my way back home from the town centre ahead of me first in the shopping centre then walking across the road I noticed three tallish young men in front of me - tall good looking men a rarity in these here parts so they were worth a glance anyway . Well, I don't know if they were part of a band but the centre lad looked exactly like Buddy Holly, including the glasses. Unfortunately they darted up an alleyway so I had to let them go..........

We all think of Buddy Holly as the "big star" he undoubtedly was, but really he was just one of many at that time.

It's a sobering sight, where he played his last gig, at the Clear Lake Surf Ballroom in Iowa, of all places, before his fatal flight with a young inexperienced pilot, in a very small plane in bad weather.

Even Led Zeppelin liked to Rock n' Roll

(If I ever get to Heaven I want to be a female rock or rock n'roll guitarist - if anyone important is listening)

Another example that rock n'roll will never die, and is here to stay, and moves and evolves through the decades here is the Johnny B Goode clip from Back to the Future ending on a different rock note....

It says 1958 but would suggest by the look of Chuck Berry and the audience (who look more like jazz/beatnik types by the way they're dressed) that this actual performance is a few years later.

Actually, I'm sure it was 1958. Chuck famously appeared at the 1958 Newport Jazz festival, and was generally sneered at by (though loved by some) Jazz fans, who had a very snobbish attitude towards Rock 'n' Roll.

Ah that would explain the way the audience looked - I got the Jazz bit right anyway

He was well received by the audiences, despite an atrocious backing band, including a clarinet. A curious inclusion, but I guess it was a case of getting "bums on seats," or "feet on the grass," for the promoters.

They probably thought he'd be a bigger draw, than this iconic performance, staged during the daytime, which has been more enduring.

True but if rockabilly is your thing it's worth checking out Imelda May.

Wow - here we go again with a bit of 50s Rock n Roll Bill Haley style!

I think this is from a movie and obviously the U.S. scene - I wish I'd been around in those days - I would have really enjoyed dancing to this music.

FYI soon I'm meeting with an elderly relative who remembers the real scene in the 1950s UK. From what I've gathered she was a bit of a mover - so I'll learn more about those times

I've found this just recently - I think it's a few years old now - a BBC Arena documentary about Buddy Holly - it's worth watching!

ps The guy playing guitar to the left behind Buddy Holly is actually a distant cousin of his in the first clip, I can see the likeness.

Bit of an unlikely pop hero but.......Rave On !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IUV-QxwlRM

I just missed out on Buddy by a few years but his 'Greatest Hits' albums were still popular when I was at college in the early 70s.......maybe there was a revival around that time

Ha! I linked this and my cat who was lazing near the fire immediately perked up and came over - he's a Buddy Holly fan like his mother!

Not to let on where I live but a venue is being restored near me and there is a little walk of fame on the pavement outside - noticed Buddy Holly played there amongst others such as the Beatles, Stones, Roy Orbison, Mark Bolan, Tina Turner, Joe Cocker etc - I wonder what Buddy thought of our town?

I'm reading 'Buddy: The Definitive Biography of Buddy Holly' by Philip Norman - really enjoying it.

On the subject of restored venues.......

I'm reminded of a piece in a BBC magazine programme, about The Cavern, I think it was the fiftieth anniversary. The numpty reporter was reading out some of the names of artists inscribed on the brick wall outside.
Having read out a few he then decided he'd be a bit patronising and picked on one and said "Who remembers Tubby Hayes?"

The Cavern didn't confine itself to pop in the early days.

One of our best jazz musicians, if not the best, still revered today.

Here is a K...razy blast from the past - Jerry Lee Lewis Great Balls of Fire and Breathless.

In one of his concerts he actually set fire to his piano and played this first number with the flames lapping around him.

Interesting to see the audience here too.

Some of these rock n rollers started riots and were banned from various places.

As the lady says here are the 'rock n roll specialists' aka Buddy Holly and the Crickets - posted this before but what the hell

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEl3UUl1Fmw

And another repeat - Chuck Berry and Johnny B Goode
