It's the Eurovision Song Contest, not the European Song Contest.

To participate a country needs to be a member of the Eurovision Broadcasting Union, which also includes some countries in the Western Asia and North Africa (although the North African countries do not participate because Israel does).

The contest is televised globally, and Australian fans are among the most enthusiastic in the world. As the contest celebrates its 60th birthday this year Australia has been allowed to participate (but only for this year) as a reward for the enthusiasm of its Eurovision fans.

Israel is a member of the a Eurovision Broadcasting Union, as are some other countries that are not (or only partly) geographically in Europe (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Russia). Any country in the EBU is allowed to participate.

Australia is not in the Eurovision Broadcasting Union (it's much too far away), but has been allowed a one-off wild card entry this year to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the contest.

I think its great but one thing confuses me, considering it takes place when it is 7am in Australia how will they do the live vote? its usually shown the day after in prime time, never live.. not first thing in the morning.

I think this is a great. Eurovision always takes itself far far too seriously IMO, so it's nice to see them bend their own rules a little bit. At the end of the day it's only a game.

Oh yeah, and they need to send Courtney Act !

If this is a one off entry what's going to happen if Australia wins?

All countries have a jury, so they'll be having some votes. (They may also be doing a televote as well.)

If this is a one off entry what's going to happen if Australia wins?
They'll be allowed back in 2016 to defend their title; however, the Contest will be hosted in a European city of SBS' choice.

I LOVE Australia, they've given me some of my favourite singers! I'd love Jessica Mauboy or Ricki-Lee to do it, although of course the former did Sea Of Flags as an interval performer last year and I doubt they'd give her the opportunity again sadly.

Nobody cares about them in Australia. No one even talks about them.
