Nicola Roberts - why didn't her career take off?
Her album is a pop masterpiece so why didn't she get the success she deserved?

1) She isn't an attention seeking trollope like Cheryl
2) She actually has a talent, but got lost in the mix. |

Loved her solo stuff
On the one hand it's disappointing she wasn't more successful (she certainly deserved it!), but on the other hand I quite like the fact that she made a little niche for herself. Also, she'll always have great songwriting abilities, something Cheryl will never have. She can certainly be smug about that!I've got a signed copy of the Yo-Yo single somewhere

It's a tragedy she is not fairly recognised as a very talented artist. I absolutely love Cinderella's Eyes and the fact we probably won't ever get another solo album from her makes me feel very sad.
I'm still sickened by how the press always went after her for being the "ugly one"...the way she was bullied for years by the media was disgusting. |

how odd this thread should pop up as i earlier today downloaded 'yo-yo'.
i only discovered that song purely by chance from youtube, so there we already have part of the reason she was not successful. absolutely zero promotion. though to be honest releasing that god awful 'beat of my drum' song as her debut was one big fat mistake. though im sure shes making plenty in song writing royalities |

I thought she would've had a lot more airplay than she did, having the perfect face for radio...perfect voice for radio I meant, perfect voice!

Beat Of My Drum was the worst song to launch the album with.
She should have launched it with either of the other two singles or Gladiator or the albums title track. |

I don't think the lead single helped. What was on the album was nothing like Beat of my drum.

Because it's pop music. You have to look Photoshopped to perfection at all times.
I dare say Cheryl probably has a team of make up artists on hand to make her look irresistibly gorgeous so that she can go to the toilet. **sigh** Nicola's vocals on Untouchable were sublime, beautiful and angelic. She was also part of the awesome Girls Aloud B-side Memory Of You and, iirc, Kimberley was the only other member who provided vocals for that song. Had Cheryl and Nadine provided the vocals instead it wouldn't have had anywhere near as much character to the song but it would've probably gone top 10 as a single because she's worth it. -_- |

She peaked as a singer and an artist too late in Girls Aloud's career.
To many casual listeners she wasn't much of a presence in Girls Aloud and unlike Cheryl, she didn't have being a footballer's wife and being on TV to kickstart her career and give her an identity. GA weren't like the Spice Girls where each member was branded from the get-go. Yes, she had a lot more vocals, solos, and embraced her looks around the time of GA's 5th album era and on the Greatest Hits, but GA were on the wane by then, so I think it was too late for Nicola to develop much of a dedicated fanbase. Another reason is that her lead single unfortunately was released at the same time as Beyonce's Run The World (Girls), which uses the same sample, and of course Beyonce is much higher profile, so people may have gone off her for 'copying Beyonce'. |

Nicola was the best or second best singer in GA but didn't get enough of the lead vocals.
The most talented member of the band whatever. Brilliant first album, diverse set of well written, personal songs. It was a critical but not a commercial success. I agree about the first single not being the strongest single on the album. I much preferred her without the fake tan and her glorious ginger hair n the later GA. |

As a pop star she is uninteresting and lacks any appeal/personality.

I largely really like her album... but I think her vocals can be a bit marmite especially on songs like Cinderella's eyes and others.
It's a shame because her vocals during GA were largely flawless; she can easily switch between styles - compare her solos for Call the Shots/The Loving Kind, Life got Cold and Wake me up; they're all very different but she can pull off each style whether it's a simple gorgeous vocal, or a more spoken 'attitude' vocal. |

Was I the only one who loved Beat Of My Drum then? Not familiar with her other songs really but that one was great.

Her album is very good. Very personal. Beat of my drum and Lucky day are poor representations of the album. |

Because she has an unremarkable voice and her image doesn't suit being a pop star. Basically she has no charisma.
