chromecast woes
hi guys , hope i can pick your brains ,,,,,,,, and thanks in advance
went into pc world today and explained my problem . my elderly parents have a basic limited broadband connection. i have a first gen moto g , on unlimited data 3 now obviously i watch a lot of netflix (notflix lol showbox really ) the objective is to visit my parents once or twice a week and put a film on their tv for em now the first gen moto doesn't support a mini hdmi ,,,,,,,,,, im quite happy myself to watch films on the phone screen ,,,, but obviously my elderly parents need to see em on their large tv. the lady in pc world sold me a chromecast , assuring me it would do the job. ive set it up at ''my house '' tonight as a test run ,,,,,,,,,,,, questions , why does my wi fi have to be on ? isn't it just using my 3 data ? ,,,,,,,, as when i go to my parents , i cant burn their limited broadband ,,,,, i just want to use my 3data . and also ,,,,,,,,,, its lagging on video ,,,,,,, which it ''never'' does if i just use my 3data (i live in a good 3 area) ,,,,,,,,,,, this leads to my suspicions above on wether or not it would use my parents wi-fi. is there a work around ? ,,,, should i take it back to pc world ? |

Youve completely missed the point on how the chromecast works.
You control it by your phone, but the chromecast will pull its data /feed from a wifi connection in other words it will use the broadband connection at wherever its located. The only way to get it to use your mobile data is to use your phone as a mobile hotspot ( tethering ), however you will soon use your data allowance, and if your on the one plan from three then you will soon loose the unlimited tethering, as far as i know all other plans have limited data and/or limited or no tethering. Chromecasts/rokus/any other streaming device uses wifi, there is no work around, if you want to use such a device you will need a decent data allowance ( 80GB/month +), or an unlimited fixed line broadband account. I would advise taking it back, getting a decent broadband package at the location you want to watch netflix, and buying a better device such as a roku. ( i own both the chromecast and a roku stick ) both of which use my wifi/home internet, last month i used 102GB of data, most of which was streaming ( according to plusnet data use statistics) |

to be honest with you, your best option would be upgrading the internet connection/changing supplier and streaming over wifi.

Who is there Internet with? Surely you could call up and get them a better deal or if they have a set GB amount change it to unlimited and you pay the extra few £ for them.
Surely that will be cheaper than buying an entire new phone just so they can watch a film on occasion. |

Download the media file to your mobile first, and the use your mobile as the data source. Make sure the mobile is on the same network as the chromecast before you begin streaming.

Before you rush and take cc back, there are options to try.
If you preload files on your mobile, wifi speed won't matter. you will only use internet to establish the cc connection. Preload file on phone and use app like video stream to cast as other posters suggest. Alternatively use your phone as a mobile hotspot and connect it using a second phone (pay and go will be OK as it will use hardly any data). Predownload film on second phone and use app like video stream to cast. If you get a good signal on mobile, you might be able to cast live. This is not tethering although technically controlling by other mobile is but data use by second phone will be miniscule so you will not have any issues. |

I've not done it myself but work colleagues have, some BluRay players support Miracast, some streaming boxes. But its a pain, I grant you. |
