I recently purchased a new car, Vauxhall Corsa 10 plate.

The car has come with the attached connector socket (see pic below).

I think this is for an mp3 player as the stereo system itself has a button for CD/mp3/Aux.

What type of connector do I need to be able to connect my iPhone 5S to the car stereo system? Does the connector go into the headphone socket or the "lightning" socket of the iPhone?

Looks like a standard 3.5mm socket to me. I've got one of these, although I don't think I paid that much for it http://www.halfords.com/sat-nav-audi...io-cable-3-5mm

But loads of places sell suitable cables, I've even seen em in poundland

Thanks. So by the looks of that cable, the end that plugs into the smartphone goes into the headphone socket, rather than the lightning cable socket?

i.e. basically I need a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable?

A wireless solution would be to buy a Bluetooth to 3.5 mm jack e.g.

This way you have less cables to distract you when driving.

Another really great device is a 3.5 mm to fm radio transmitter which plugs into phone and creates your own local radio station. You then tune radio to frequency of device (use a frequency not used by radio stations nearby of course).

http://www.world-of-accessories.co.uk/35mm-jack-wireless-transmitter-p-1635.html?gclid=CMeakpag3cMCFaQIwwodwx8AHA

These devices have been legal in UK since 2006.

Of course a simple 3.5 to 3.5 mm cable will work and is very cheap but does not have super-geekness

For the ultimate in geekness, you can create an FM transmitter from a raspberry pi, a piece of wire and a phone charger battery, and play you mp3 files over that and tune car to your pi radio!

I made one this afternoon, and copied DSOTM by Pink Floyd onto the PI, and it now plays the album over fm. Totally pointless activity really but was fun to do.

Silly question perhaps but does your audio system have bluetooth capability anyway, them you would not even need a cable to connect phone?

It has a "Parrot" device that allows me to make and receive phone calls from my phone through a small "Parrot" gadget that is on the dashboard. This operates via Bluetooth.

However, for some reason whenever I play music through my phone, with the Bluetooth switched on, it will not stream through the parrot device and therefore through the car's speakers - not sure if it simply doesn't have this functionality or I'm not doing something I should be?

Base Parrot device does not have music streaming capability.
So I would go for a simple cable or FM solution
